Bad Bad day

Bad Bad day.
We lost our 17 yr. old neighbor boy next door. Killed in a auto accident, his older brother and his mom were the ones that found him late this morning.
We found out late today and went over to offer our condolences. After we got home my wife took the neighbors dog over to play with our black lab. When they got to his pen our dog didn't get up and tear around like usual.
She managed to get him up and saw that he wasn't right ...........really bloated!
She ran inside and got me out to go and see what I thought was wrong with Odin. By then he had made it to his "favorite spot" under the camper!!!
Long story short, we got him down to K State medical lab and they said he was in critical condition. While we were trying to grasp what to do next, he passed away on the table.

So after getting home with him, my neighbor and I laid him to rest. He will be missed!!
For those who don't know who "Odin" is, look up Norse mythology.
Thanks in advance, jdadoug.

So sorry for both losses, when you lose a cherished pet, it is like losing a child, they are our kids too. Take care!

Thank you

Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts.
Once I got in the house last night and had a chance to turn on the computer I did a little checking on what was the cause of death of Odin.
You see I had known just a little about this but really hadn't done my home work.
Odin died of gastric dilation/volvulus or "GDV". For those of you who own large breed of dogs, this is something you really need to know about.
Google it and read up on it, its a scary thing. Simply put, their gut can twist and can die.
The only thing out of the ordinary before he died, I had not knowingly given him a second helping of dog food. When this happens they then drink lots of water and it causes gas which leads to bloating. They can get to the critical stage very quickly and the only remedy is emergency surgery.
So to all you with a large dog, fed you pet several times a day in small portions.
Thank you again for your condolences. Jdadoug
