Be Very Careful When Selling Your Stuff
Careful of selling on Craigslist.
We just had an incident near here on April 28th, where a man named Timothy Bosma posted his 2007 Dodge Ram pick up for sale on a number of online sale web sites. Two men answered the ad on May 9th and wanted a test drive. Tom went with them on the test drive he hasn't been seen since.
So be careful.
Below is a link to the police a blurb on the case,
But if you google "Timothy Bosma" you will get more info

Be on the look out for a 2007 dodge Ram pick up black in colour, Ontario licence plate 726 7ZW.

Very Scary. I feel awful for that man and his family/friends.
My DH sells odds and ends on Ebay, no threats.
I sold my last camper through Craigslist while having a garage sale.
Now I'm thinking how many countless people I invited over. Never again after reading that and hearing other stories.

When the neighbor was home alone and someone was coming to look at something she was selling on Craigslist, she would call and ask if I could be there also. Needless to say I was there every time. You have to be on your guard all the time.

Wow. Sad that you can't just trust people. While I have no idea how it all went down, this is another reason I never leave home w/o my Ruger LC9.
And no, I don't want this thread hijacked to discuss the 2nd amendment!

All of this happened in the Toronto/Waterloo/Hamilton area of Ontario Canada, so whether you agree or disagree with the 2nd amendment to the US Constitution (and agree let's not debate that here), it would not have help in this case; the 2nd amendment does not apply in Canada.
But we must take a cautionary lesson from this incident and be careful in dealing with strangers. In this case in particular it may have been better to take only one person at a time on the "test drive", but hindsight is 20/20.

Thanks Barney, good idea to re-address these warnings. What a shame that things like this are more common place than we like to admit. Trusting others is the right thing but trust only goes so far.

It is just so bizarre!
The one suspect that is in custody in this case didn't need to steal a 2007 truck. The suspect had loads of money. He owned the farm on which they found Tim Bosma's remains. The suspect bought that farm with $800,000.00 cash.
It is like an episode of Law & Order or CSI.
Bizarre and scary

It was so sad to watch this develop and end in the worst way it could I hope we get to learn what motivated these murderers to kill a man just to get his truck.

Thanks for clarifying the location, as at the time of my post I had not read the article.
That said, there is no reason to believe this can't happen in the US, and so my point stands...your safety is your responsibility alone, so plan accordingly!

I agree with you Force. I've always carried my 1911 Colt shoulder holstered when showing vehicles. It removes all bad guy temptation.

I listed some jewelry making supplies on Craigslist for $100. A woman called me from the northern part of the state; 5 hours away. She and her daughter drove down, breaking down about 3 hours away. They BORROWED $600 to fix their car enroute, but they continued on. All for $100 worth of stuff. Made me very uneasy; and I wasn't going to open the door if a man showed up with them. They bought the stuff, then didn't seem to want to leave. Finally got them out the door 45 minutes later!! Locked the door and watched them drive away, then heaved a sigh of relief; from now on, my DH will be home in those situations.

Very sad story. I'm so sorry for his family. We have bought and sold things many times on Craigslist. We haven't had anything bad happen but I always worry about it.

I was raised as a latch key kid so I don't trust anyone's intentions. ALWAYS cover yourself and have a back up plan. You might not make as much but selling to a dealership or trading in may just be worth it.
Oh, and traveling en mass is a good idea too.
So sad for this man's family.

The story gets stranger and sick.
The accused in the this case, Dellen Millard, bought a incinerator to burn the remains of farm animals - he had no farm animals.
They are looking at Millard for the disappearance of a women who's last contact was with him.
I also read a report that connected Millard with the death of his father, which was ruled a suicide.

Ask for Drivers License when dealing with Craigslist Buyers/Sellers
I've used Craigslist a lot and for the most part people are good but there is that percentage that is TROUBLE. I make it clear that I will ask for ID so that cuts out the rif-raff
