Bear Necessities

We went to the NC Zoo on Saturday and they had a really cool demonstration on camping with bears called Bear Necessities. They showed chewed up coolers and yeti coolers. Really great educational pieces I never knew like putting toothpaste and toothbrush in a Tupperware container.

The best part was when they released Tommo the grizzly bear loose on a bad campsite. They had 2 aftershave food fights, leaving fish on the grill, spread something out and even leave marshmallows on sticks by the campfire site. They hung the food bag low also. They left and the bear was let loose. He had a lot of fun with it. Eating fish, honey, Apples, peanut butter, popcorn and even climbing up on a rock to eat donuts. He was able to get into the regular cooler but not the bear safe container that was doused in honey. Oh and I should mention, Tommo was brought to the zoo in the 90's after being relocated in Yellowstone twice for going after campsites and being labeled a nuisance bear. Sorry, the pics aren't the greatest.

X2 on not knowing about toothpaste/brush needing to be put into tupperware but then my knowledge doesn't go much past the basics, like the importance of keeping a clean campsite Their example was a 'Bear' invitation, lol!

And I'll add, don't go outside at 6AM and cook bacon on a small burner in Montana; cause you will most likely have company.

An old saying...if something falls into the forest, the deer will hear it, the eagle will see it and the bear will smell it.

It was pretty cool to watch. I really thought the bear would just tear through the campsite but instead he just meandered through it eating things. He would work on one area, MoveOn to another and then come back to something. He did keep trying to open the bear safe container but couldn't get it.

when you are that big, you don't need to run. Who's gonna stop you?
