Beartooth Pass Story
I grew up in eastern Montana and Moms family were in Eureka Ut. south of Salt Lake City so we would make a trip down there every other summer. This was back in the 50's and 60's before many Interstates were built in that part of the world. We generally went through Yellowstone Park as Dad saw it as a shorter route. But, we went through as fast as traffic would allow and on out the other side.
One time on a return trip Mom had her way and we were to slow down and sight see some of the major attractions. Made it in to Jackson Wy. and stayed over night then left out the next morning with the intent of stopping at all the places along the way and to find a motel in Cooke City Mt. that night. I do remember a lot of geysers and the Yellowstone Canyon.
When we got to Cooke City it was late and there was not a room to be found anywhere. So we got a bite to eat and hit the road to Red Lodge Mt.
This was 1959 and the road over the Beartooths was fair at best back then. I know it was dark and there was a full moon and Mom was kind of freaking but Dad had his jaw clenched and said we were going to have to do it. To me as an 8 year old kid it was just beautiful in the full moonlight. The stark relief of rock and snow was awesome. We did make it in to Red Lodge around 10 pm and managed to find a room there.
That was one of our family stories we told whenever we could to people who thought they had seen some bad road.
I will tell you about the Yaak Mt. story another time.
