can anybody name this plane??

The Grumman OV-1 Mohawk is an armed military observation and attack aircraft, designed for battlefield surveillance and light strike capabilities. It is of twin turboprop configuration, and carried two crew members with side by side seating. The Mohawk was intended to operate from short, unimproved runways in support of United States Army maneuver forces.

I know this one - B52D. This particular bomber was once stationed at Carswell AFB here in Fort Worth with the 7th Bomb Wing. It participated in the bombing campaigns over Vietnam.

I think (not sure without researching) that it is now a "Gate Guard" (meaning on static display) at either Anderson AFB,Guam or the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

The "D" did most of the bombing in Vietnam after it was modified under the "Big Belly" program to increase its bomb load.

The B52F and B52G were also used in Vietnam,but not much as the "D" was.

Some interesting trivia - the B52A,B,C,D,E,and F were often called "Tall Tails" due to their vertical tail being taller than the vertical tail that were introduced with the B52G and H models.

Also on the "Tall Tails" the gunners station was in the rear of the fuselage. The gunner in the G and H model was stationed up front with the rest of the flight crew.

I think their are about 76 H models still flying at Barksdale AFB and Minot AFB.

Back in 1969 they were testing a Mohawk here in Franklin for landing gears. They were using a section off the paved runway for hard landing test. On a landing the front landing gear collapsed and the Mohawk flipped. No one was hurt. I saw it happen.

our flight line in wiesbaden germany we had 9 OV/RV`s and 8 RC12`s or king air 200 with Guardrail and Quicklook..we flew the border between east and west germany everyday, every hour, somebody was sitting up their, 365/24
we were hell on the ground crews..

the other is what happens when you hit a bunch of birds on takeoff.. thank god for Martin Baker

I used to fly in to that airport to grab a bite to eat at the hotel cant remember the name, they had great prime rib. I used to work over at the airport off 58 called hampton roads and lived over in suffolk after the military

Very good point - too often the ground crews and other support personnel are forgotten when the flyboys churn up the air.

Are you close to Barksdale? If so do you see the 52's fly in and out?

One thing you won't see with the "H" model is the heavy thick exhaust smoke from them that used to come with the earlier models on takeoff. That's due to the "H" model has fan ducted engines (eight of them) that provide more thrust that the engines used on the earlier models that used a water/alcohol mix for added thrust on takeoff.

frank if you hung around enough you might of saw me, loved this old bird, 1955 C170B did the interior, engine, windows in my garage, put about 400hrs in her before I had to sell it (kids), out of the 3 we owned it is my favorite, the 1965 musketeer and the 1947 V35A was a close second.. Also miss the dog (Dutch)

I worked for Grumman as a Flight Test Engineer. Hutch 333id is absolutely correct. It's an OV-1 Mohawk

I used to feel sorry for FTE`s we gave them a crap load of work and always road their butts during my stint on the FA/18EF flight test program for McDonald douglas / Boeing

That "N" number is now assigned to a 1968 Cessna 177, CN 17700889 registered to a Nemo,SD corp.
