MillerTime,
I apologize for my un-informed numbers. The human toll was far greater than I knew. So what happened to the engineer?

Ok guys you are getting off track. Please keep it to the new vehicle being manufactured and a debate over recalls or one brand vs another. This is one last attempt by the site team to keep this thread open.

While I'm not a purchaser of GM products, I also would worry about quality from Chinese manufacturers. (Many years ago, I made a mistake of buying a small, 49cc, scooter that was made in China..total junk and I couldn't find a single motorcycle mechanic willing to work on it.)
But if Toyota can product quality vehicles in Mexico, maybe GM can also do it in China.
We will see!

It may be a world market but to manufacture in China you have to partner with a Chinese company. So much for protectionism being detrimental.
Also, if you think it doesn't matter where stuff is built, it hasn't cost you your job yet. As far as "outsourcing being good for America", I'm still waiting to see the benefits (beyond the increases in corporate profits).

Oh brother.....like no one could of anticipated where this was going to go.
Every major car manufacturer has a Chinese subsidiary or division. Love the Toyota in Mexico comment. How about Toyota in China?

"Chinese" does not automatically mean "bad quality" any more than "Made in the USA" ensures good quality. The Chinese companies will build in exactly as much quality as you are willing to pay for. Look at the Iphones. 100% made in China, but they are know as quality items.
For a historical example, take the Koreans. The first generations of their cars were crap and sold horribly. At first, the Koreans figured low cost would offset the low quality and they would sell millions. It didn't work, and Daewoo went out of business They quickly realized that they need to up their quality in order to sell cars. Now Kia and Hyundai offer world class quality. Seriously. Go drive one. But you will notice that their prices are not that great compared to other manufactures.
I'm not scared of Chinese quality just because it's Chinese. I'd be more worried about the company who contracted with the Chinese, and what level of quality they are willing to accept.

A couple things; Not picking on GM but, GM doesn't make cars they make MONEY. GM was the first American car co. to enter the Chinese market many years ago. Manufactures will go to the least cost country that can logistically manufacture what is needed to accomplish their end, (i.e. profit). It's all about price point. More and more americans cannot afford a new car outright, because they still are beyond the means of a good many households. So, leasing was invented to put those families behind the wheel. Chinas' economy is not doing so well recently, thus tanking the markets, theirs and ours of recent. Apple keeps upwards of 100 billion with a B, corporate profit off shore to aviod US corporate taxes. Now theres a patriotic company. I get they will use what ever holes there are in the tax code to keep their PROFITS, it's called BUSINESS. There is no fairy godmother, I googled it and the internet said so. So, ladies and gents, buckle your seats, because the endijng will not look pretty.
