Have made colorful fires for years with two pieces of material. Slide it into the fire and makes shades of blues, greens, and orange for hours. The metal piece is reusable, just insert a new piece of materiel the next time you make a fire. Cost.... pennies or free if you can get this 'junk' before it is thrown in the trash.

Yes and no. Use three and the whole fire is color and used one before and you will get a few colored flames. Like anything in life more is better.

Take a 6-8 inch piece of old rubber garden hose that is no good anymore (any type or version will work) and slice it in half. I have seen at some RV store sell pine cones sprinkled with copper shaving and it does close (but not as good) the same thing.

We used to throw pieces of Bell telephone wire into our campfire (again, after we were done cooking on it,) and get the same result, but only for a short time. Must be the copper.

Ok, so:

1) Yeah, we've used them. Kids love them. Just need one pack in the fire to keep our 2 kids happy.
2) We can find them for $1 at the dollar store. Any more than $1.50 and you're getting ripped off.
3) As mentioned, the copper pipe is cheaper, but I like the simplicity of these. No prep work.
4) When I was a kid (~30+ years ago) there was a Scout Master in the district that worked at a place that produced paints. He used to create something along the same lines, but was able to get a whole rainbow of hues. When I use these, I'm slightly disappointed that they don't compare to his. Camping World has these Rainbow Flame Sticks - Rutland Fire Clay 715CB - Fire Pits - Camping World which produce a large range of colours, but again, still don't quite live up to the original. Much more expensive so I use the cheap dollar store ones for just our kids and I'll use the CW ones when we have a group campfire with lots of people.

Copper makes the blue flames, If your bored some day make a pile of filings from an old copper pipe and throw them in a fire you will see the blue. I got the same stuff at the local drug store in a soda bottle size container for $5 a week ago.

My dad was a metallurgist (metal chemist) and brought home some magnesium fires starters his co-worker was trying to perfect. They were about the size of a charcoal briquette.

At the time it was a bit too hot. If lit on the trunk lid of a car it would not have stopped burning until it hit the gas tank.

Sorry, I'm more of the visual type. It sounds like you need two 6 - 8" pipes, is that right?

One pipe for one side of the fire and one pipe for the other side. This will allow the fire to have an even flow of the copper reaction.

My one post I put to use a half inch pipe size. I should have said a one inch pipe size.... easier to stuff the rubber hose in and lasts for many more uses.

We used to get mag logs off of the pipeline when they discarded them ......
