I see this was already answered above but wanted to elaborate. In the early days of satellite internet the sat receivers were just that..."receivers". All outgoing information had to go through a phone line. This was a LONG time ago though and a phone line is no longer needed.

I just cut cable TV out of my life and went to an antenna. I first tried a spare RV antenna that I had I only picked up the public TV channels 3 in all. So I figured that was all I was going to get. Wanting an outdoor antenna I looked around and saw believe it or not (The Magic Stick) it was only $8 on Ebay so I decided what the heck. When I got it and put it up I received 14 channels total with all the local networks. I couldn't believe it but it did work and I live in a valley with the hill between me and the stations.
