Digging Dog
I have a 9 year old black lab. He has recently started digging up our flower beds any time we leave for more that a few hours. We recently were gone for the day and when we returned home there were 6 different holes in our flower beds. He doesn't dig anywhere else, just the flower beds. Any ideas?

He's nine and just started this? Perhaps he is digging for a nutrient he is missing, given his older age. Does he seem to be eating anything from the flower beds? Or, have some animals (moles, chipmunks) moved in to your flowerbeds recently?

He digs out a bed to lay in and evidently then moves to a new spot. He digs out the mulch down into the bare earth and I can tell that he has been laying there. I could accept one hole but six in one day is just too much.

Wow! Peculiar. He obviously likes the softer ground from a flower bed. Perhaps a large indoor/outdoor cushion? Older dogs often need cushy places to lie down due to arthritis and aches/pains.

Sounds like he's digging down to cooler/damp soil. One of our dogs does this...*under* the RV. 
I'm sure the mulch is hotter/dryer than the bare soil underneath.
Of course it's easier to dig down to the cooler soil in the flower beds.
Poor guy just sounds like he's *hot*!
Now, we have one dog that digs small holes a line, underneath a large oak tree, then licks the soil. We're thinking that's something to do with a mineral deficiency and there's an underground root underneath the row of small holes.

Hermit. Heat is a great explanation! He probably stays cool a while then when his body heat warms the soil, he starts over...etc. Explains six holes too!

I imagine the flower beds are watered regularly as well.
We don't have outside dogs, but I'd imagine a mister would help dogs who are outside full time.
Spoiled brats here, if I leave 'em outside more than a few minutes in this heat (105 to 110 heat index) they'll start body slammin the back door.

Haven't had to water this year as nature has taken care of that. Wettest summer on record. He lives outside. We live way out in the country so he is free to roam. Neutered so he usually just stays home. Neighbors feed him when we're gone. He just started this last year and as I said only does it when we're gone. Usually just lays on the porch. I think he's punishing me for not taking him when we camp.

Our previous Weimariner used to dig when we first had him. I found on the Internet that putting a small amount of their own poop where they are digging will stop them. It worked like a champ. The digging stopped on the third hole.
