Dodge/Ram diesel fuel mileage?

I have a 2005 Ram 2500 4x4 6spd man 4dr 6.5 ft. bed with 4:10 gears. I have been fantasizing about a new/newer TV. I have a few friends with similar newer trucks...the mileage they report is between 11 and 18 by the computer and general driving by different people.

I have not been using fuel treatment in the last year or so and have not reset my computer in a while. I reset it a few weeks ago and it was 20.8 with no recent 5er towing(whole other story). I got some treatment and reset it 3 tanks ago. I have only driven about 150 miles since and the rest is around town. Anyway...I wondering what your experience is with newer trucks. Here what it said yesterday.

5.9s get good mileage, but that is way to far fetched to believe. Something not giving you an accurate reading, not that those displays are accurate anyhow. Have you done paper and pencil figuring?

I usually run low to mid 20's in my 2003 when empty. Around 16-18 pulling pulling my loaded 20' flatbed.

Previous TV was a 2012 Ram 3500 CTD 4X4 Crew Cab Dually with Max Tow option which included 4.10 gears and 6 speed automatic. Around town average 13.5 mpg, driving empty on interstates sometimes 16-17 mpg, towing a 43' Toy Hauler (16,500 pounds) averaged 8-9 mpg. YMMV. New TV is a 2014 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4X4 Ecodiesel with 3.92 gears and 8 speed automatic rated to tow 9200 pounds max. Around town average 22-23 mpg, driving empty on interstates 26-27 mpg, towing a 6,300 pound travel trailer average 13-14 mpg. YMMV

A week ago I just bought a 2012 Ram 3500 dually . 6.7 Cummings with 6 speed manual. Cruise set @ 64 mph getting 15 .4 mpg according to the display. Haven`t towed with it yet but I`m guessing it will be around 10-11 mpg range.

Bought a 2011 mega cab dually,6.7,6 speed auto.On the computer it goes 14 flat in town and high 17's on the highway.Went a a short shake down tow and got 12.4. We are going on a long trip in 10 days and will see how it does out in the real world.

I was concerned about lower mileage on "newer" trucks. Thank you for your input. Assuming one day we will camp some more...and go more than 25 miles. I guess then I can actual mileage test. Maybe my ole truck is o.k. for a while.

99 5.9, 3:54 gears, 47RE ( 3 SPEED/W OD) pull'n 11,000 lb. 5er, from coast to coast,out and back, at 65/72 mph, got 11.4 best to 9.2 worst...Dodge, of course.

Not sure if it was said, but the display is not one to rely on.
Fill your tank and reset the trip on the odometer.
Run the tank close to empty.
Return to the same pump and refill the same as last time.
Record the total gallons to the tenth.
Record the trip miles on the odometer.
Divide miles by gallons. (Ex: 300mi ÷ 30g= 10mpg)
This gives you an accurate miles per gallon average per tank.

Don't mean to come across elementary but many people don't know how to figure mpg.

Bob Caldwell's post above is most typical when it's calculated, though contrary to what some will claim.

2015 Ram 3500 Dually Long Bed 4x4 6.7L 3.73 axle with Aisin 6 speed automatic tranny. Non Towing 14.5 to 15.5 mpg, Towing 42' 5er at 18,000 lbs. 9 to 10 mpg @ 60 to 65mph, hill towing 8.3 to 9.6 mpg.
My new Ram has 3100 miles on it so far. Heading out for another 800 miles round trip thru the hills towing so see how it does this time. I don't care about mileage I bought this new truck to tow with and not slow down for hills and it hasn't slowed down for any hill yet. Love it better than the 2001 Ford 1 Ton 7.3L I had for 15 yrs but it just couldn't take the big hill good enough but the truck wasn't rated for this kind of weight back in 2001 anyway. My buddy loves it towing his 10,000 lbs. TT. The old Ford F350 had 132,000 miles on it when my buddy took it. Now he drives it daily for work and tow.

What you need to realize between your truck and the newer Ram trucks is several items have change to effect the fuel mileage.

1. The 6.7L engine is larger and will burn more fuel than a 5.9L engine for a given amount of work.

2. The emission strategy on all 6.7L engines will effect the fuel mileage it will be lower than a 5.9L engine truck.

3. The newer trucks are heavier and weight effects fuel mileage.

4. The over head fuel mileage is always wrong, mine is off by a 1 mile or more. This is after I have adjust the program and tire size on my truck with a Smarty.

If your old truck is in good shape and can pull the trailer keep it!

I have noticed the big difference in MPG in the above posts. Dodges/Rams diesels are very popular here in SE Texas and I there are many people that I know who have them. For years they have complained about the low MPG that the get, they love their trucks but don't like the low MPG. Some of those higher MPG numbers listed above are indeed hard to accept. The 3.0 6th cylinder I would think are about right but then they will not tow a large fiver.

Why would you want to tow a 5er with a 1/2 ton toy?
Dodge 3500 diesel gets better mpg towing than a F350 towing the same weight.

F350, or 3500 or bigger.
