Darn Lou, but I'm starting to see somewhat of a sadist side of you here.

Curiosity got me:
Camping Rules and Regulations | Missouri State Parks has " The use of electrical insect-killing devices is prohibited."
Wow. I wouldn't have guessed.

I don't know Turbo, does it fall under this regulation?
The discharging of firearms, BB guns, paintball guns, bow and arrows, sling shots or any devices that use burning powder, explosives, compressed gases, etc. is prohibited.
Would air be considered a compressed gas?

Air is a gas and it can be compressed.

Back in the day when bug zappers were a fairly new gadget, my farmer uncle decided to put one up on a light pole outside his house. Unfortunately, being out in the country, and surrounded by flat fields, every bug within a one mile radius could see it. The first night it got clogged up so bad he had to go out and clean it up to keep it from self destructing. The next morning there was a pile of ashes under it about the diameter of a dinner plate and a foot deep. The moral of the story is: It has to attract 'em before it can zap 'em.

Besides, if Turbs and Lou are the with loaded BugaSalts, no one should have any problems.
The electric bug zappers w/attractant light will get mostly good bugs (really, are there any good bugs?) but the biting ones really like the CO2 and IR people put out. Lots of hot, exhaling bodies around a fire should be very appealing to most mosquitoes. So bottom line, get two or three people away from the most talkative, least hydrated person and you should be ok.

Our neighbors at our last S&B had one. On balance, I believe it attracted at least twice as many as it killed and those left alive plagued the hell out of all the other neighbors in the street. I guess we got about 3 times the skeeters we'd have had to deal with if the neighbors hadn't had the zapper.

Surely you jest. The big honking brown sign at the entrance is usually a dead give away, as is the Missouri DNR badge/patch on the rangers, and the words MISSOURI STATE PARKS numerous times in the wad of literature they give you upon check in..

The evidence would seem to indicate that we have a pretty poor history of predicting our effects on the environment (although some of that is corporate greed overriding good science).
But ok, I'll play. Perhaps the birds don't like the taste of zapped mosquitos so you're taking away their food supply. Or with all those zapped mosquitos, they just sit around on the couch, get fat and lazy and can no longer protect themselves from predators so they die off. I think that would be sad, but I imagine we'll see a new thread soon with the topic "Do You Shoot Those Noisy Birds (that interfere with me listening to my Boom-Box)?"
|
I can't speak for birds, but I can gar own tee ya FROGS love fried bugs. Kids used to get a kick outta sittin in the back yard near the zapper and watch the frogs gather under it. They'd get so full they could hardly hop.
If Louisiana is representative of the entire skeeter population in the US, there aren't enough campers with zappers in the lower 48 to risk skeeter extinction.

I think Avon makes more off that product as a bug repellant than any other product they make.
