Electric Bug Zappers

How many campers use the electric bug zappers and what brand do you have? Do they really work?

I've got one , had it for years and it works great, if I leave it on all night I get enough ashes in the morning to fill an urn. I don't no what make it is though but it's not made in China (figure that's why it still works).

Well, having learned from experience (all bad) and reading the manual (finally), I discovered that those "bug getters" need to be placed as far away from where you are as possible.

It is like putting up a huge sign to the bugs "Sex party and all you can eat at Herk's campsite"

This does not make for a comfortable evening (even though I used to get great satisfaction hearing the little devils fry...)

You are very welcome to set as many up as you want at YOUR campsite as mine will then be "bug free."

We use to go to the Marion County IA campground in Knoxville, IA and had 5 or 6 campers set up in a huge ring about 200' across and would set a pole up in the middle with a zapper on it and it worked great. Kept the flying varmints away and everyone enjoyed the show, especially the kids.

May start hanging one on the laundry board on the ladder and see what happens.

Sorry; Tree hugger here. So you're going out into THEIR environment and then you're going to kill them? Humans! How about just using a chemical repellant to keep them away from your person.

100% Deet is all we use.
We are well past the time when we need to worry about 3 headed kids.
This stuff works great on everything.

What possible good to the environment are mosquitoes other than food for birds? We're just saving the birds from having to expend energy chasing them.

These zappers get more than mosquitos (like fire-flys?).

The evidence would seem to indicate that we have a pretty poor history of predicting our effects on the environment (although some of that is corporate greed overriding good science).

But ok, I'll play. Perhaps the birds don't like the taste of zapped mosquitos so you're taking away their food supply. Or with all those zapped mosquitos, they just sit around on the couch, get fat and lazy and can no longer protect themselves from predators so they die off. I think that would be sad, but I imagine we'll see a new thread soon with the topic "Do You Shoot Those Noisy Birds (that interfere with me listening to my Boom-Box)?"

How a bug zapper discussion can turn into a political discussion never ceases to amaze me...

FYI. Some campgrounds prohibit zappers. Missouri state parks specifically calls them out on the rules and regulations.

For the home, I built 4 'bat boxes' in the backyard to give the flying rodentia a place to live. A family of bats can eat more insects in a night than your zapper can kill.

I didn't know that MO state parks prohibited bug zappers. I don't own one but it's good information to know.

I had considered getting one. I'm also thinking about the C02 repellers and the homemade traps. I currently have the natural spray, the DEET spray, and the torches with the no bug fuel. I guess I'll see what works and get progressively expensive til I figure it out.

I've looked at the Missouri state park regulations and can't find any reference to them. Was wanting to know as we are planning on going to Crowder State Park by Trenton, MO the last of Aug for 10 days. Class reunion & visiting friends.
