for those of you with a d-max

Since I am new to the d-max but not diesels in general....

At what temp do you guys start to plug them in for a cold winter morning start?

Iv e yet to even put on the winter front on but tomorrow morning is supposed to be the coldest morning of the season for us .... I know I know a balmy -3* degrees F. with a high of 8*

At work we have timers on our big trucks which kick on about 3 am .

just wondering what you guys do .

The manual says to use it below 0. Our forecast for tonight is a low of 1. I plugged mine in.

Actually I believe I read that and totally forgot ...... stupid turbs !
I think I read that the winter front needs to be on in continuous below 0 temps as well.
I guess I just like your guys advice better !

Do you have yours on a timer ?

I had a 15 amp timer laying around that was used for a dairy operation and had the timer come on at 2 am for a 515 am start.

thoughts ?

I also do not put on the winter cover because my egt' s are 200 degrees higher with the intercooler covered, I think they were higher than that with the stock exhaust including that piece of crap downpipe and cat

Is your cover the one that covers grill and bumper ?
I heard they went away from that as when I bought mine it was just the grill !

I plug my truck in whenever it gets below 0 C. (32 F.). I only have the winterfront on the grille even though I have the bumper cover also. Truck has NOT thrown a code in the time I've owned it and plugged it in. Tonight it is supposed to get down to -32 C (-25.6 F.). I have a heated garage so not plugged in tonight but at work it is always plugged in below freezing.

I had a 2001 that would throw a code. It was the fuel temperature sensor, if I can remember correctly. If it sensed a 10 degree difference from the tank to the sensor then it would throw a code. That would only happen when it was plugged in with the front cover on.They changed it out under warranty but it kept happening. I would have them check it with a Tech2 and if that was the code then I would have them clear it. I eventually got a tuner for it and I cleared the code myself. I now have a 2011 and have been plugged in and have the front on and no problems ....so far.

I plug in when I get home in evening, if it's anywhere around freezing, and it stays there until morning when I hit the remote start while finishing my coffee.

Okay I had to go there. We don't have to worry about plugging in down here, 70 degrees today. HAHAHA.

You leave yours plugged in while running?

I do leave it plugged while running, at least until I walk out to leave. I always put the defroster on before I shut it off in the evening also, which helps keep the window clear. Although when I start with the remote start, it automatically turns defroster on with fan high regardless of setting.

I will generally plug mine in below freezing, plug it in before I go to bed the night before and unplug when I leave in the morning for work. It might be just a mental thing but I think i get warm air in the cab faster when I plug it it.

I sure had a shorter warm up time this am with it plugged in!
It came off of fast idle quicker!

I have plugged in when ever it is 32°f or below. Never had a code, usually plugged in the night before. And I believe most are coolant heaters- thread into the water jacket on the block. Of topic, but my buddy with a 6.0 ford plugs in when it is in the 50°s. I think its time for a fuel module and program update though.
