The reason you should ALWAYS disconnect the negative terminal FIRST, is so if you slip with the wrench and touch the vehicles sheet metal or chassis you don't short out and cause a shower of sparks and damage to your wrench!

True, When I explained that to a couple of buddies that it flowed that way they balked and called bull on it. Had to open the hood and show them the positive cable went by way of the alternator. Stumped them until one asked a wrench tech at work.
