Hail and Ford pickups.

Certain areas of North Texas were hit last night with severe weather, including baseball size hail.

That got me wondering how those of you who have the new Ford pick-ups with aluminum bodies fared during recent hail damage. Mainly was the damage to them more or less severe than vehicles with non- aluminum bodies?

Also how has the hail damage repair process been? Have any body repair shops refused to work on the aluminum body?

Don't have a Ford aluminum body with hail damage, but I have had several aircraft and Airstreams dinged up over the years. With that hail storm I don't think it would matter what your vehicle was made out of, I am sure it got the living daylights beat out of it! Aluminum can have the dents removed up to a point. Biggest problem is the elasticity difference between steel and aluminum. Aluminum has more "memory" and is harder to get pulled back into place. It will also depend on the particular alloy of the aluminum too.

Yes - that was one heck of a hail storm. The third one in the past 2-3 weeks. Repair shops are backed up for several weeks.

I know the damage hail can do to aircraft. When I was still a FAA inspector and hail stuck my airlines aircraft, it cost the airline millions for lost revenue, overtime, engineering and so forth. Each damaged aircraft had to be inspected and all hail damage mapped out. Then the engineering people had to determine if repair could be deferred or not.

A big big mess.
