I've always got a kick out of seeing off-beat attractions and such. I also like Americana history. Well, the history of the Muffler Men is a great combination of the two passions.
The Muffler Men were fiberglass statues, marketed mainly to muffler shops, hence the name. However, there are several variations, and different heads to these. There is even another kind made by the same company called a Uniroyal Gal.
The following website, keeps a track of all the Muffler Men reported to them. It also explains how to identify them, shows a tracking map, and also gives the history of the origination for these pieces of Americana advertising.
I bet with all the traveling members we have here, that we could probably add some that have not been reported.
Muffler Men
If you have any pics, I would really like to see them. I included a pic of me visiting one while up in Sturgis, SD in June. To put it in scale perspective, I'm 6'1".
