Heads up.

Just a heads up for AT&T customers. This morning I received a call from a "foreign"for lack of a better name, male.

He went on to say that the AT&T computer network had been infested with a virus - at least that's what I think he said. He said a code 099 would be on my computer.

I played around with the idiot as I knew he was scamming. I asked some questions such as if he could repeat the code etc. I then hung up on him.

My caller ID showed his number as119999992112.

Just a heads up.

What? no claim that he's a Saudi prince and "just needs help moving 15 million dollars out of the country, and he'll pay you 5 million if he can use your checking account"?

I don't give them one second longer than it takes me to figure out they're scammers. Never know what technology they're using to try to hack you somehow.

You sure he wasn't talking about 'Agent 99' from 'Get Smart'?

Yeah, I get calls like that all the time. I often just hang up. Waste of my time.

I love the approach my brother used to use with telemarketers:

Telemarketer: "Hi, can I speak to Mr. <last name>"

Brother: "Sure!" - hands phone to his 3 year old son

Nephew: "Hi, wanna hear what I did at school (daycare) today? So, first I went to play with the cars, but timmy was using the cars first, so I decided to play with the blocks instead and then we decided to play together and I used the blocks to create roads for timmy and me to drive the cars on and then the teacher wanted us to take nap time, but I wasn't tired but timmy was so timmy went to take nap time and then I got to play with the cars by driving them on the blocks and I even got to play with my favourite green car. Do you know what my favourite colour is? I'll let you guess but it's green. That's why I like the green because it's green......"

My brother never did know how long they'd be on the phone trying to get a word in edgewise before giving up.

Sneak has a routine for those who call *just* as we sit down to eat dinner:

"we're eating dinner, give me your home number and I'll call you back after we've eaten"

"you can't/won't give me *your* phone number"?

why *can't* you do that?

"because it's your private home number"?

"Well you're calling ME on MY private home number."

"I think I'm entitled to your home phone number in return"

never fails...they end the call there

I think he was representing himself as an AT&T agent. These guys are not only crooks, but they're dumb also.

In todays world almost anyone with a pulse is suspicious when a foreign speaking person with an unknown phone number calls them.

They need to get English speaking people with U.S. Phone numbers.

I had one last. Week that said he was from the US Treasury. He claimed I was in big trouble and I needed to answer some questions. I asked what would happen if I didn't and was told that the US Marshall service would arrest me within 30 minutes. One of the first things he asked was what is my address. I didn't give it to him. I did ask if he would be on the team sent to arrest me. He asked why and I told him I wanted to shoot him first. He hung up so I called him back but he kept hanging up on me. No since of humor.

I have a simple way of handling unwanted calls but my family thinks I'm mean for doing it.

Me: Do you mind holding?
Telemarketer: No, not at all
Me: [put phone down and I go back to finish watching my movie]

I hang up phone when I hear "If you would like to make a call, please hang up and try again".

Comedian Tom Mabe, who often appears on the Bob & Tom radio show out of Indianapolis, has an album out called Revenge on the Telemarketers.

Here's a youtube clip of one of his pieces

A good friend of mine got a call from someone pretending to be from the IRS. They told her she owed a whole bunch of money and proceeded to threaten her to pay right now. They told her she would be arrested if she did not pay. When she said no they said they would pray for her. They called her back several times, each time getting more threatening. She contacted the police who said they couldn't do anything to stop the calls or track the scammers. Her lawyer on retainer couldn't do much for her either. This is a known scam the IRS has been fighting.

I read someplace, possibly on the National Do Not List site, not to call these crooks back.

I was/am on the NDNL - reported every scam call to them - I quit after getting calls from the same people that I reported several times. Not worth the trouble.

Sneak and I signed up for LifeLock 10 minutes after the following happened:

Call came in on Sneak's phone, which is on my cell plan due to the fact that I get Fed. Employee discounts.

Dude claimed that *I* owe ...get this....30,000.00 on a Bank Of America Credit Card which I have defaulted on.

1. I don't have a BofA credit card.
2. What reputable company (or customer for that matter) allow/has a 30K CC balance to begin with?

He had my name, our correct address, correct place and address of employment, and all he needed to verify that I *do* indeed owe this was the last 4 digits of my SS #.

Sneak kept messing with him, "ok, you tell *me* the last four digits of her SS#", etc., and kept telling him that he nor I even HAVE BofA credit cards.

He threatened lawsuits, etc. and Sneak told him "fine, we'll see you in court"

caller: no, the lawsuit will be against your wife

Sneak: I promise you, dude, *I* will be there in court with her and you'll find yourself facing a countersuit.

..........dial tone.........

P.S. There was one very good clue that it was a fraudulent call: lots of expletives from the caller. Sneak had lots of fun with that.

W - what good would the last four digits of your SS number be to him?

I'm asked for the last four when I call several companies I do business with.

Caller ID for me. If I don't recognize the number, I don't pick up.

I got a phone that can block 250 numbers. I also added the SIT tones at the beginning of my answering machine message and that helps with the robo-dialers.

I see the part used to use and wonder if the same thing happened to him as it did to me. Put my niece on the phone who starts talking the kid talk and all of a sudden after about a minute she starts to cry. The guy on the other end apparently told her he was going to kill her and her family and to sleep with one eye open. Not good....and no way to find the clown that did it.

If you have an android smart phone you can use this program
WhoAreYou Caller ID + Blocker

Get a call you don't recognize, hit the "DITCH" button, then hit it a second time, and from then on, when that number calls the phone might ring for a split second, but the call is ditched and SIT tones are sent out to notify a robo system that the number has been disconnected.

And, just in case it is a legitimate number from a number you don't recognize, you can always "unditch" the number.

Have had it for a few years, and love it.
