Help I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel

Will be traveling down I-64 from Williamsport MD to Virginia Beach VA. Problem is that my camper is to tall to fit in the tunnels. (13' 6" max height in tunnels). Best route I see is to cross over the James River Bridge on 17/258 and then cross over another bridge on 17. Anyone have any comments or best route options

How tall is your trailer??? Tractor trailers use the tunnels

You are correct on your route IMOP. Tunnels are 13.6'

Don't forget about the downtown tunnel on 264. You gotta go all the way around south.

Hello from SE Virginia.

You have a couple of options you can use. First, you can do as you stated using the James River Bridge and avoid all of the tunnels, but that takes you through a great deal of city traffic and depending on the time of day you could end up in some real traffic problems.

Second, and this is what I do whenever we are returning home traveling south on I-95, while driving south on I-295 (bypass around Richmond) instead of getting off at I-64 east toward Williamsburg continue south on I-295 toward Petersburg and take US Route 460 east toward Suffolk. Continue on this route until you intersect with route 58 east. Stay with that and you will begin to see signs for VA Beach using I-264 east. DO NOT USE This to get to VA Beach. It will take you through downtown Portsmouth and Norfolk via the downtown tunnel. Follow the signs toward Chesapeake using I-64 until you intersect with I-264 after passing the Indian River Rd exits and then follow the signs toward VA Beach using I-264 east. I know that this seems confusing, but you avoid all of the tunnels and downtown traffic, etc. Hope this helps.

FROM NORFOLK AND THE SOUTHSIDE: Take I-64 east to 664 north through the Monitor Merrimac Memorial
Bridge Tunnel (MMMBT) back to I-64 west.
FROM WILLIAMSBURG AND THE PENINSULA: Take I-64 east to exit 264 (for I-664 south). Take I-664
south through the MMMBT to I-64 west.

Some info on the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel;

Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, Interstate 664
The I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) opened in 1992.

These four-lane twin tubes connect Newport News and Hampton to Suffolk and Chesapeake.

The MMMBT typically carries about half of the volume each day of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and is a practical, less-congested alternative.

To travel from Interstate 64 to South Hampton Roads using the MMMBT, take the I-664 South exit (264) and continue to the Interstate 64/264 interchange. The tunnel does not charge a toll.

Restrictions

Maximum height: 14 feet 6 inches (with permit)
Maximum width (with permit): 10 feet 6 inches
Wider vehicles must be escorted by VDOT.

You will have to stop prior to going through the tunnel to prove to VDOT "gatekeeper" that your propane tanks are shutoff. If you don't stop they will chase after you and may give you a fine.

Do they allow propane in the tunnels? I don't think that the one in Baltimore does. Good Luck

Virginia does allow propane on RVs, but you usually have to stop to be inspected & they are required to be off.

Thanks for all of the quick responses. The Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel is the way to go. All other tunnels are to be avoided if you are taller than 13' 6 ". Yes, you have to stop at the gatehouse to have your propane tanks inspected to make sure that are off.
