Idaho trying to make it legal to speed while passing

Passed the house, going to the senate and has the support of almost all LE agencies in ID.

If passed and signed it would allow drivers to go up to 15 mph over the speed limit while passing fellow drivers on two-lane highways. The bill would only apply to roads with a 55 mph speed zone or higher. Drivers still would not be allowed to speed while passing on freeways.

Any other states have such a law?

Not here in GA that I'm aware of. Off course folks here do not know what a speed limit is. Later RJD

It's legal here.

But you'll jar your iced tea out of the glass if you do.

Never heard of it here in NC, you can only pass as long as you maintain the posted speed limit. Why risk your life and those of others?

Not speeding while passing is risky. When passing, get it done.

Going over a speed limit doesn't magically endanger the lives of others... lol.

C'mon Ace, you know that the speeds posted on the signs in Georgia are not speed limits.....they are just suggestions.

Montana you can go ten over when passing on a two lane highway. Freeway, supposedly not. That doesn't mean a mile down the road you can claim you're just passing, ahem, but permissible here for that short spurt. Theory is the less time you spend in the other lane the better.

Just thinking about the laws of Physics..........

If the speed limit is 60........and the guy in front is going 57..............just exactly how are you going to pass him if you go 60? Just how long IS that straightaway in your state??????????? And just how lonesome ARE you on it?????

I agree, but I have been traveling AT the posted speed limit on a narrow two lane road and have had people blow by me at 15+ mph over, only to run out of passing zone and hit a posted 40mph curve, they didn't make it around the curve and I had to slam on brakes to keep from becoming part of THEIR problem.

I can see having to pass something going well under the speed limit, just don't see the need to pass something traveling at or near the speed limit.

I have always done this unless what ever I am passing is going dead slow.

I do slow back to the posted so my time speeding is minimal.

What I dislike is those people who speed up while I am trying to pass them.

So, there are other states!

As for long straight roads? Quite a few here in Eastern ID, and I've done it a few times before. Hope they pass the new law so it will be legal.

My belief, there is a good number of drivers who's brain interprets speed limits to be whatever the sign says plus something between 5 and 30 MPH.

It's not about what you do, or what I do, or the number on the speedometer, at least not to me. It's about safety, especially while tooling down the road in control of a 25,000 lb, 60 foot behemoth.

Is passing that important? That's my first question?

Can I make it with DOUBLE the space to spare? That's my second.

That said, it is odd the number of folks that are determined to drive 45 mph, but can ONLY stand to drive that speed from a position in front of you!

Please be careful! I'm old, and don't have a lot of time left. Don't take it from me by passing someone for no reason!

Here in North Carolina, sometimes there's a campaign that goes "Obey the sign or pay the fine""

It was a while back, but I got pulled over in IL while passing. The cop suggested, "If you aren't allowed to speed in your own lane, why should you be allowed to speed in someone else's?"

In Oregon if you had 3 vehicles behind you, you were supposed to pull over - not sure if it was a written law.

And here's a little speeding humor.
I'd redone the brakes on my Spitfire in anticipation of a trip cross country from Chicago. I had a great time drifting through the mountain turns on my way to CA in my little red sports car with the top down. After a spell on the LA freeway I saw a wheel pass me up. Damn - it was mine! All four lug nuts were sheared off, but otherwise there was little damage.

I hammered out two lugs from the other rear wheel, realizing then that I had forgotten to torque the lug nuts after the brake job. Back on the road again, I was gingerly going 60 in a 55 thru LA on the way to a place to get new parts, when I got pulled over.

The LA cop was nice, only offering advise. He said, "If you can't keep up with the traffic on the freeway, take a side road."
