Question iphones

I recently bought a macbook pro and find it very useful, to the fact that I am interested in buying an iPhone 5 when it becomes available this fall, my daughter has an iPhone. It will my first smartphone so I am not familiar with what it can and cannot do. All three wireless carrier of iPhone, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint seem expensive not only plan wise, but I will need to pay a new customer signup fee as well and in addition $85+ for two yeas for the service.
For those who have smartphones, are they helpful to have when traveling?

How much do you value your smart phone while traveling?

Use it all the time for this and that.
Satellite setup
Gps
Are a few.

Do a search on here someone posted about "favorite apps"

There's a lot of info on that thread.

I use a "smart" phone everyday. iPhone 4S has been amazing for me, while at home and while traveling...

You can even contribute to Forest River Forums on the phone using their app!

As far as service goes, I have a Sprint phone and Verizon tablet. I have been a fan of Sprint for years but it seems my tablet has far better service. Sometimes I have full bars on my tablet when I have none on my phone.

My company pays for service on both so I can't comment on pricing. I just think Verizon coverage is better.

I use my smart phone all the time when traveling....look for places to eat (read reviews, find closest restraunt, type of food, etc), also use for any other services within the area. Once I had to locate a reputable place to look at my vehicle - thanks to the smart phone (and yelp reviews) I found a great mechanic who helped me at a reasonable price...lived up to their reviews. I would be lost without my smart phone when I am on the road - its a built in tour guide, helping us discover points of interest in addition to our planned stops. I dont have an I-phone, I prefer Android...its an ongoing debate at work- we have races to see who will get info faster - thus I stay with Verizon and my Samsung android phone....either way you go, its bound to enhance your travels once you get used to it

I read particularly in the Verizon plan about tethering, which if I am not mistaken means I can get interconnection on macbook pro? I don't understand about hotspots can you relate?

Your responses are all very helpful and interesting, but I will be away from my computer fora few hours, so if I don't respond right away that will be why. I want to continue with this discussion later because it is extremely helpful
Thanks!

I love my Iphone 4. Waiting to see what the 5 offers, or may get a Galaxy III. I guess you could say I'm addicted. There are so many useful apps you can use while traveling it makes you wonder how we did without them back in the dark days

Correct. Most plans charge extra for tethering. I use mine all the time. And depending on signal strength I can stream netflix and amazon to my Roku player.

apps - You might try Allstays Camp and RV for iphone which is great to check cg locations both in Canada/USA. Includes link to map and cg phone etc. It is expensive for an app $4.99. A similar app is RV Park Finder (free). Also recommend RVCompanion which provides logs for TV and TT.
Enjoy your iphone
