Also, I'm speaking only of USAF planes.

I remember a "buddy" talking me into getting into an ancient (by any standard) Hu-16 flying thingamajig. He didn't tell me that they were going to do a JATO until we were taxiing to the end of the runway. I heard the pilot jam the throttles to max and we rolled ever-so-gently forward - and then ALL hell broke loose when the JATO bottles lit off. Suddenly we were at a thousand feet and I swear it took a full twenty minutes for my nether region to loosen up again.......

It would probably take more than twenty minutes if you were in that JATO equipped B47 shown. It has three rows of 11 rockets, each with 1,000 pounds thrust. They are mounted on what we called a " horse collar" that was attached to moveable hard points on the bomber that rotated after use and jettisoned by the pilot.
Cold War readiness at it finest - each B47 on Alert Status was equipped with them as well as a nuclear weapon in its belly.

You would be surprised at what can be had at a government auction.

Do they hold government auctions in Iowa? We all know a member who lives there and has lots of free time on his hands.

Not a clue, never been there.
I can tell you that for some you must be known and invited.

I know at one time the government would auction off government vehicles that had reached their service life. If you knew of a certain vehicle that was assigned to your office was going to be auctioned off, you could bid on it.

I bought one from my old job years ago, I let it be known I wanted to buy it and it was made to happen.
