Greetings B47. With the winter we are having so far the consequences of drunk driving can easily be quite expensive and very embarrassing. That being said; the local and provincial police here in Ontario are very diligent about enforcing the anti drinking laws on a firm is fair basis. In other words no let goes. They are out, often en mass, almost every night throughout the holiday season doing what they call ride checks where everyone is stopped and given a cursory check for impairment (drugs or alcohol) If you blow near the legal limit for booze you may be given an immediate, 24hr license suspension and someone else must drive or you take a taxi (don't get caught driving then). If you blow over I believe it is an immediate 2 week suspension, a night in jail and a date with a judge for more punishment which I think is a full year suspension. You also have to retrieve your car from the impound and pay for towing. Multiple D.U.I.'s get you an ignition controller that won't let you drive unless you blow zero alcohol once you are relicensed. Of course if you should, God forbid, kill someone you would probably get D.U.I. plus careless and motor manslaughter charges. MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, also runs ads about the problem all year but especially in the holiday seasons. I don't know the exact penalties as I no longer will drink and drive but they are quite severe and getting more so. If anyone wants to correct anything in this post, please feel free to do so. Old Guys (Brian and Joanne)

OG - sounds similar to what we got here in Texas although I only know what I read in the paper and see on the TV.

Check points have been used here on a limited basis, but they have their defenders and those who are against them.

Just too bad people can't or don't use the common sense they were born with.

Thanks for your reply - always interesting to read what our neighbors to the North are doing and how they handle things.

Merry Christmas to you also.

Where we are there are "twin cities". The city across the river has bars that stay open later than over here.
So the city cops over here set up just across the bridge on this side and get all the drunks that party over here til the bars close, then go over there.

Obviously DUI laws here aren't strict enough, as you see arrest reports where someone just got arrested for their 5th (or higher) DUI.

One other thing is that drunk driving is a crime as per the criminal code so if you want to cross the border you have to declare that you are a felon. No one wants anyone impaired on the road but the ride programmes are a bit much, "we stopped 22000 drivers and got 2 drivers who were just over and three that were just under" does not seem very cost effective and inconveniences a heck of a lot of people.
