I got shot at with the Russian variant one of those flying over Iraq.
They did not have the TELs so they buried a sewer pipe vertically in the desert under the airways we flew on. Then they wired the ignition system of the rocket to a car battery and waited until they saw us on departure from Baghdad Intl.
While it was ballistic and not very accurate, it had a HUGE warhead and the burst diameter sent shrapnel out several thousand feet. Gave the aircraft quite a "push" even thought we did not catch any fragments.

Herk, did you deliver any of these? Our son got to load the prototype from Lockheed as a loadmaster on a C130. After a big hassle about the tires having to be deflated to load it and that it could not be left that way inside the plane, they finally told him they could inflate them from onboard the vehicle. Long story short, they finally got it tied down and then dropped it to analyze any damage to it from being dropped on the re-deflated tires required to get it out of the plane.

No, but I understand what happened. Our cargo floor is aluminum over truss forgings. Heavy stuff like tracked vehicles need LOTS of shoring to keep from punching holes in the floor.
That vehicle looks pretty tall and the loading ramp is pretty steep. As any trucker will tell you if the road under a low bride is not level even if you have the height restriction "made" you can still hit the bridge due to the approach or departure angle.
So to clear the upper door, they had to deflate the tires some to get it to clear the door as it went over the ramp hinge. once it was level again inside, they could not take a chance that the tie down chains would compress the tires to the point the the rims would contact the floor and damage the aircraft. Re-inflating the tires inside was the only way to keep the plane safe. They most likely had to repeat the process to get the thing back out.

I think back on all the tolerances we had to hold on the A1s......to see one drop out of the back end of a herk like that......well so much for the tolerances.......

Yes, they had to deflate the tires to get it out. Don't remember how many or the size of the chutes they used.
Now, with the Guided rockets, both the MLRS (tracked vehicle) and the HIMARS (truck) can hit a 3' x 3' x 3' box from 43 miles.

Don't think they (A1) would fit in a herc. Our MLRS (12 rockets) wouldn't, the HIMARS just barely made it with 6 rockets.
