moon up close
Had a mostly clear night in Missouri, giving us a great opportunity to get a pic of the moon's close passage tonight.

Wow! I can't believe how sharp the picture of the moon looks.

Fantastic shot.
Gotta know the secret. You are indicating a 400 mm lens, but there is no way that my rinky-dink 75-300 mm zoom lens will let in enough light to take a moon picture at those settings. It has been cloudy here the last couple of nites, but I took some pictures during the 2011 moon perigee, and the best I could do was about 1/400th at 1600 ISO.
You have to be using 1 of those expensive "white" lenses. Inquiring minds want to know.

The 18 megapixels of the Canon EOS 60D sure helps! Lens used was the Canon 400 mm EF f/5.6L USM AF. Also, I was well braced back against my garage with the camera solid as a rock hard against the wall!

Yes indeed! One of those white lenses!
Here's a shot my wife Kathy, shot of a pair of Summer Tanagers in a hickory tree just 50 feet from the front walkway! We'll be going through Yellowstone and up into the Canadian Rockies, and I'm sure there will be many more shots if you're interested!

Impressive !! That lens must let in much more light than the lens that I have, even at the same aperture. That is probably the difference between the cheap zoom lens that I have vs. a quality fixed lens.
Even with a 1/640 shutter speed, holding a 400 mm lens still with that clarity is quite an accomplishment, even with your back against the a solid object. Great job !!
