Moving from one RV to another

I'm sitting here procrastinating....yeah, I know..great start for the New Year, eh?

I'm trying to convince myself that it'd be easier to just the TT over to the dealer and move every thing from it to the 5er on the lot, instead of unloading every thing here, bringing the 5er home and loading it all back in.

The salesman even asked us if we'll be moving out/moving in on the lot.

So my question is;
For those of you who have done this, which way did you go?

Which way makes more sense?

Pros?

Cons?

Help me justify sitting here while I *should* be out there in the cold packing every thing up?

We've always unloaded/reloaded at home. Gives me time to sort out some of the stuff that isn't needed. Then trying to find just the right spot in the new unit takes me some time and I don't want to rush through it. But that is just my way. Do what is easiest for you. We've always traded in warmer weather so no worry about getting out in the cold :-)

One way is as good as the other, it's still gonna be cold.

This is a splendid opportunity to cull out all the stuff you have been carrying around for ages and never used. Not to mention taking your time and organizing the 5ver the way you'd really like to have it.

I would tend to want to do that at home.

On the other hand, moving each item once, not twice, has it's advantage.

Perhaps going to the dealer, prepared to spend the day and armed with a few cardboard boxes for the cull-outs is the way to go.

IMO, if you have the room to store it at home, I'd do it at home.

We just went through this last month. We were able to store most things in the shed and a few things from the kitchen in the house.

After going to the dealer and changing from one camper to the other and bringing the new one home, we have just about completed the stocking of the new 5'er.

What I found was:
1. that we were carrying a good deal of stuff we never used (thought we might use), this would have just been transferred to the new.

2. You are going to need things like tie downs, hooks, hangers, etc, in the garage areas. Why load it up and then unload it to add these things. I also found newer and better storage bins.

3. I wanted to explore every nook and cranny of the new 5'er and find where everything was. Would have been a real pain to have to move items out of the way.

4. Also having it empty of personal items, I was able to give a good hard look for any leaks. I hooked up, and ran, all systems at the house for a week. I checked every day for any leaks. Again, would have been hard to look in all those places had drawers and cabinets been occupied.

5. You're going to see a few mods that need to be done. Easier to do them without moving stuff of getting the stuff all dusty.

We gave ourselves a month before the first trip to get everything set the way we wanted it.

Good luck with the new rig.

I think at home is more work, but it gives you time to really look at your stuff.

At the dealer it's just shove it over and deal with it on the first trip.

Toss of a coin as to which you'd prefer.

Yep, the deal's done. Saturday pick up.

Radio and Tom...yeah...(sigh) OK, time for sweats I guess...but maybe I can put it off a bit by going out and turning on the fireplace and waiting to let it warm up inside? DH will be home from golf in a couple of hours. He needs to be able to get in on the fun yanno.

Not a lot of stuff to cull, TBH. Haven't had this one long enough to clutter it up.

I was thinking I'd feel a bit odd dragging out linens, etc. in public, wagging them across the lot to the new one in front of God 'n everbody.

But if we loaded/unloaded on the lot we could shake down camp over there somewhere (90 miles from home for a night). Or we could do that anyway, and just pack for the equivalent of an overnight stay in a hotel, with bedding and bath linens included. See? gets complicated.

Perfect point. I was leaning to doing it here at home, but was surprised that the salesman mentioned the option of moving out/in on the lot.

I wonder how many people actually do that.

I'm a "nester", and while I don't have "clutter", I do have...no they're not 'nik naks, they're not dust catchers...they're "accent pieces" that I use to make the RV more like "home"...small items that have personal meaning for us, but might seem insignificant to others.

So, yes, it'd be just shoving it all in the new RV and sorting it out again here at home, putting every thing in new places.

BTW, I discovered *Museum Putty*! No more packing those things away every time we hook up and travel.

Thanks to whoever it was that mentioned that here.

We make the switch at home which gives us a chance to throw away stuff we didn't know we had in the old camper and decide just where we want to put the stuff in the new one.

I have never traded RVs but I would remove items that I didn't use ahead of time regardless if I was moving stuff at home or on the lot.

As said there can be pros & cons for either choice. On one hand you would be moving items twice instead of once but on the other hand you wouldn't be pressed for time and could find the right spot in the new RV for each item.

Good luck and have fun with your new RV!

I think I read somewhere that when someone moved campers, they pulled them up side by side and put 2x10s across the door ways and literally walked everything over without going up and down steps. I thought that was a pretty neat trick.

Whew! That's done. Glad we did it at home.

We packed it all in boxes and staged it in his shop...which is very close to where the TT is parked and the new 5er will be parked.

There were a few things we found when we thought we were finished. If we'd been rushed those items would have been left behind and it would have taken a 90 mile trip back to get them.

Now every nook and cranny has been check two or ten times. Every drawer, every cabinet, under sofa and recliners for stray objects, dust mopped out and locked down.

She's ready to go to her new, and lucky, owners. She served us so well.

Now it's just a count down...2.5 days to go.

Oh, and I discovered I had *WAY* too many pots and pans in there! sheeesh

When we made our last RV purchase, we took everything out of the old camper and stored it in clear plastic boxes, labeled by room. As we were purchasing out of state, we packed only the boxes needed to camp on the way home for a shakedown trip (it lasted two weeks). We were able to trim down quite a bit of unneeded "sh-tuff" and only "missed" a couple of items on the trip (the pic-nik table bug covers for one).

Anything else, that's what Walmart and Camping Worlds upgrades were for.

We traded in about 150 miles from home so we unloaded at home first. Then had to mail the 2 remotes to dealer for tele and stereo. They got unloaded also.
I mainly wanted to tow new one empty just to compare it to being loaded.

I pick up the new 5er on Friday. We chose to do the switching of supplies and such at home. We have a 3.5 hour drive one way to pick ours up. I have been working on finding the right 5er and getting the financing and all done since May. It has been a long time coming. I am so excited to get the new 5er home!!!!!!!!

I unloaded at home and sorted it and put it in the pickup. Did the transfer at the dealer then went camping and reloaded. It was a little warmer in Oct.
