I grew up in a town of 600 people. (50/50 white black). Everybody knew everybody. You couldn't get away with anything!

Like others, my few friends and I got on our bikes in the morning and as long as we were home before dark, all was good. Mom never worried (well no more than a normal worry). We usually rode out to the lake, a 3.2 mile ride one way.

We talked to strangers and even entered "juke joints" to get a pop. Never once feared for my safety.

We literally have more information and power at our fingertips than all the previous generations combined. But like many things, it's simply a tool that must be wielded properly to be useful.

Statics can be used and abused for any occasion and national stats can be very different from local.........

Like the stat. that less children are being hit by cars while riding bikes ...... but does that take into account that less children are riding bikes today.

or less children are dying in motor vehicle accident and while that is probably true today cars are safer, child seats are safer and laws to enforce their use and during the Great Recession people traveled less..... so are we comparing apples to apples ???

The murder rate in our area has quadrupled in the past 10 years........... just stats they can mean little when averaged over a large area like the US.

Crimes rates being reported as down is BS just trying to make us feel better but here it is not the case. Stats can easily be used for the purpose of making a point either way...........

Oh, and statistics over a larger area, over a greater sample size, ARE more meaningful. It’s called the Law of Large Numbers. Conversely, smaller sample sizes are subject to anomalies.

Fewer homicides may be occurring but your TV, car, and other personal property is at far greater risk.

It's also somewhat ludicrous to use national statistics to say any specific crime is up or down. Homicides may be down nationally but try and convince those people living in Chicago, Detroit, WA, DC, etc where it has been a regular occurrence to see double digit death tolls on weekends.

Using national numbers is like making someone stand with one foot in a bucket of scalding water, the other in ice water, and then trying to convince them they're only standing in warm water.

I still have a few 4-tracks tapes and a Craig 4 tracks player. still have several 8 track tapes, no player though. still have a box full of casset tapes, and yes still have a daily driver GMC with factory tape player, yep I may me old but I still have fun.. o ya have a few cd's and a cd player in the bike faring.. life is good

I have a 8 track player for the home stereo that plugs into the wall for power and into the aux plug behind the stereo, even kept a vhs player just incase
