"new beer cans"

I'm watching NFL football now and naturally there's a lot of beer commercials.

I see that Miller (and I think Coors also) has a new beer can design that consists of a small hole in the top ( besides the pull tab opening) that can be opened so as to allow the beer to either flow out in a steady stream by putting a finger over the hole or to gurgle out in spurts as usual by not opening the small hole.

I personally never pour beer out of a can into a glass, but when I did, I simply tilted the can back so the beer didn't gurgle.

Not liking beer in cans (bottles whenever possible) and believing that the best improvement to them was the pull tab, is the new design enought to make you buy the brands that come in the new style cans or is this just another marketing gimmick?

Me too - I have thought for many years that most of the American public would buy almost anything that is packaged and marketed properly and this is another example of that - there's no mention that the beer is any better, just a new package.

I understand that new products are the lifeline of business and that's why companies have R&D departments.

When I saw the new can top design I also wondered why the change and asked some of my friends' over twenty-one year old children. They told me the change was so people could "shotgun" their beers without the use of a funnel or having to create their own holes in the beer.

I'm not a big fan of the idea of "chugging" so I'll stay away from these cans (photo #1) but I kind of like the other new design, an open top beer can (photo #2). This design might be a nice alternative when you're somewhere like on the beach when bottles are not permitted.

It's a very old idea - they used to have a little button hole at the top center that could be punched.

I think it's a little ironic that they show what appears to be a car key to punch the hole. And yeah...I wouldn't "pour" my beer out of a can anyway. But if the advertising works, that's what sells.

Is that what they use in the commercial - I couldn't quite see it fast enought.

I thought it might be the old tried and true "church key"

Yeah, it's for shot gunning, since these are inexpensive light lagers, they are popular with college kids and the various drinking games.

Beer comes in cans???? I always thought that real beer came in kegs, casks, growlers, and in a worse-case, bottles!!!!!

On the inside of the 12 pks is an opener. Of course you have to empty the 12 pk to get to the opener.

Sounds like a PITA - imagine needing a "tool" to work a beer can.

Just start drinking beer that comes in bottles.

Not sure if this gimmick will last.

I prefer bottles. Actually, I prefer draft. Actually, I prefer draft at our local micro-brew. After that is a growler from said micro-brew, which is poured into a glass. The only thing cans have going for them in my opinion is they weigh less.

my wife's pension comes from the can plant. Cans are good and they don't break when you fall over and drop them

When my dad taught me to use the "church key" to open his beer (before pop tops) it was an opening on opposite sides. Guess all new ideas have to come from somewhere. What's old is new again. I'll stick with my Bud Longnecks.
