New Computer

Yesterday the hard drive on my laptop computer shot craps. Now I have a new laptop with the new operating system Windows 8. It's becoming more and more difficult for this "old dog" to learn new tricks. Maybe it's just more difficult for me to accept change. So far I still think Windows XP was the best of the Microsoft Windows operating systems.

I hope windows 8 is good because I can't stand my windows vista. So much so I spend most of my online time on my husband's iPad or my DH's nabi.

X2.

Although I do agree that XP was the better of the bunch it lasted nearly two years as opposed to the rest at eighteen months, both my mac's are five years old now but they are still alive and well and as fast as the day they were bought.

So far the one thing that ticks me off is Microsoft Works is gone. I can't open the spreadsheets that I created with that program. If I try to open a spreadsheet with Windows 8 a screen pops up that wants to send me to the app store. At this point I think my choices are purchase Microsoft Office or try a third party software like Open Office. For now I'll use our desktop computer (Vista) for the spreadsheets created with Works.

I also don't like the fact that I HAD to password protect the computer. Perhaps when the desktop computer shoots craps I'll have to look into Mac's.

MS Works Converter - CNET Download.com
is just one solution.

This one is from MS - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...ils.aspx?id=12

I believe you can remove the password protection. Use the control panel to do so. I have two profiles on my Windows 7 computer and neither have a password and my home is networked and includes Apple products.

I am using the free open office instead of $$$ MS office on my personal PC's. Works with all office files.

Open Office works good, so does google docs.

Macs can be good if you want other people to decide what you can and can not have. Everything on a Mac has to be approved by Apple thats why it just works.

Me on the otherhand use PC's because I like to try the latest and greatest stuff out there. Not going to happen on a mac.

Just like restoring an old car, if you want to tweek it great go for it, but if you want a daily driver you will need to spend alot of money or just buy a new one.

Thanks for those links Herk. Right now I'm still in the learning curve so I won't attempt too much until I'm fully comfortable with this system. I'm currently packing for a trip out of country and more importantly I have an RV show to attend today so learning this system will have to wait. As long as I can get to these forums I'm good for now.

Flying Dutchman and Lynkage, thanks for the endorsement of Open Office. I may try that program.
