When I was growing up outside of Rochester, NY, there was plentry of open farm land. The town would put up "snow fences"in the winter time on the open land that the main roads went though in an effort to keep the snow from drifting onto the roads.

The "snow fences" were nothing more than a wire frame that narrow pickets were attached to.

Did it work? I can't say one way or the other, but that was one way they tried to control snow drifts.

We tried snow fences about 8 or 9 years ago and it never failed it would just drift in another direction .
I broke down and bought a plow for my truck and if I keep at it I can just keep the road open enough for us to get out the mile it takes to get to a hiway.

Where you located now?

We did get a light "dusting" of snow on Christmas Day here in North Texas.

We usually get ice in the winter here.

so far, we have been lucky. all the nasty stuff has either been south and east of us or well to the north. we did get a light dusting of less than an inch christmas night, with a forecast of freezing rain this eve/tonight. i would rather deal with many inches of snow than a glazing of ice.

Ron, since it was brought up, I'm kind of curious:
You mentioned it took you an hour to go 18 miles (ergo 18 miles per hour) -is that not hard on a machine that's meant to outrun an F-18?

Turbo, you and your son are good people. Thanks.
My DH says we are going to get snow next couple of weeks. It's a big snow to us at 2" in. We'll see.

Not at all!
As long as there kicking up snow it's fine at 5mph or 100 mph!

WTG Ron,

I too would like to meet you and shake your hand someday. I am sure those men thought that the angels had sent you when they heard the sound of your sleds coming. It warms the heart to know there are still people like you and your family out there to help those in need.

The best to you and your family over christmas and the new year.

would like to shake your hand as well, turbs. not many any more would go out of their way to help complete strangers, especially in conditions you described.

would also like to go 130 in what amounts to a dining table chair seating position years ago, my brother in law had 2 or 3 snowmobiles (john deere is one i can think of). my sister got tired of seeing them take up space in the barn since it doesnt really snow much here and got him to sell them. for the next 3 yrs, we had enough snow to support (justify) owning them. he has 2 more now for just in case
