Just my take, but when I think tail number I think of military aircraft and I have read that the number represents the year ( not sure if fiscal or calendar) the U.S. government issued or awarded the contract for the building of that particular aircraft ( usually the first two numbers) followed by numbers assigned by the aircraft manufacturer.

Now the term tail number is used by some for identifying civil aircraft and usually is the "N" number assigned to civil aircraft.

Would that number on civil aircraft, be located anywhere near the, oh let's just say, "the tail"?

There was also Wurtsmith AFB. I know that Kincloe and K.I. Sawyer were both SAC bases and I think that Wurtsmith was also SAC.

A lot of SAC in Michigan at one time.

Well the regulation says the U.S. Nationality and Regristation marks must be placed on both sides of the fuselage between the trailing edge of the wings and the leading edge of the horizational stabilizers.

It is my guess that since most people call the empennage of an aircraft the "tail" that is where the term started.

We also had a radar base near Gratiot Lake (Copper harbor) that closed down and is empty now. At least K.I. is being recycled and in use now.
