If you want to call me a jack a#$ or a mule then just do it. As I said before, I heard of the show but never watched it.

Let's just say it is a good aeronautical practice. It is in some FAA Advisory Circulars.
Think about it - what good does a self locking nut do if not all its threads are engaged?

The locking nut in this application is not torqued but just screwed on enough to bottom the bolt and washer against the bracket sides. It is just a pivot for the pole.

In this application, just to keep it from falling off.

Pole pivots on bushing so infact the nut does get locked tight and torqued.

In your two bottom photos it looks like the nut is simply hand tightened and it doesn't look like the bolt and washer are bottomed out. I thought at first look that you had just "dry fitted" it together.

So if the pole does not pivot on the bushing, the bushing will turn in the bracket?

It is just mocked up to test fit.
Paint is next.

Bushing goes all the way through pole not just on outsides.

Exactly - so torque the nut enought so all of its threads are engaged and it won't fall off.

So does the bushing bottom on the insides of the bracket or go thru the bracket legs also?
