You will notice a lot, but not all follow the Amateur Radio Call sign designations. Things have changed somewhat in the last few years, but originally they only used "K" and "W". My call sign is K5AWW. I don't know this for a fact. I checked a few in
Mexico, where "X" is their call sign designation and most of their airport codes start with X.

Just food for thought...maybe that is why they changed ORD to KORD.

I sit here and ponder these things on a Friday night with some Jack on the rocks.

if you are referring to ICAO and IATA in airport codes, I believe OC is correct in his post #5983.

It is my understanding that the "K" and "W" were assigned in the early days by the FCC to radio stations - W being assigned to radio stations east of the Mississippi River and K to radio stations west of the Mississippi.

At least that is what the correct answer was when I took the FCC test a long time ago.

You are correct, it was the Mississippi, not the rockies...

I hear you and I thought that the east west thing was true, util. When I was a teenager back in the mid 60's we all listened to KAAY out of Little Rock. Kinda blew that out of the water. Maybe way back that was the case.
