The hummingbird feeder was over top of 1 of the dinner tables. The bats were the nightly entertainment. Those little puppies were about as quick as hummingbirds.

Here is 1 that landed for a couple of seconds:

Those shots were taken with my underwater range finder 35mm camera, so I had to estimate the distance and there were no options to zoom in.

We also found this bad boy (or girl) on the porch right outside of 1 of the rooms.

We never did figure what the white thing on the rear was.

Just to put things in perspective, this is the terminal (and only building) at the airport:

That's one big wolf spider (or at least it looks big).

Think that was a tarantula. And that puppy was big.....those floor planks were at least 10" wide, and maybe 12".

You are talking Virginia; Right? Tarantulas are not known to live in VA, weather gets too cold in the winter. If that is a tarantula it is escaped from someone's home or was brought in by truck.

When living in TN, I saw some extremely large wolf spiders.

I shutter to look at that spider (No pun intended). That would freak me out. I don't think I could sleep with one around. Where was that taken? That airport terminal is a scream!!! Looks more like a make-shift bus stop in a third world country. Good pic.

[QUOTE=mtnguy;353341]I am impressed on the pictures that have the hummingbirds in flight. I have not been very successful with capturing those fast little puppies. The pictures here should inspire me to more attempts this summer.

Just don't "Chase them around the yard" MtnGuy. From what I know, they scare easy. Although, your Hawaiin shirt should be a good attractant. LOL

No, the tarantula photo, as well as the fruit bat and airport terminal were all taken in Utila.....1 of the bay islands off the coast of Honduras.

I checked the bed thoroughly every nite before going to sleep.

The runway had weeds growing out of the cracks. 5 minutes before the plane arrived, a couple of locals came and tagged our luggage.....before that it was just us there. No ticket counter, no security to mess with. The luggage was loaded by the pilot and co-pilot.

Sorry, I just assumed which was not the right thing to do.

No problem. I had noted in many posts back that the bat at the feeder was in Utila, but I didn't mention that in my more recent posts.

On another note, this puppy was just in my back yard.

I think it might be a cross between a fox squirrel and a grey squirrel.

Ever to over to Broward NC to view their white squirrels. They are white; not albino.

OK folks, Newbie time. Been shooting a while, have a couple of 5D's with three main lenses, 16x35, 24x70 and 70x200. Just bought into the RV thing (Wildwood 22RKS) so the wife would agree to go with me. First trip this season is Kodachrome Basin over the Memorial Day weekend. Looking forward to seeing where everyone else likes to go too.
Anyone into night shooting??

Interesting....
I'll be in and around Capital Reef that same weekend.

As for night shooting....a few years ago. Not much in the last few years....

Oh my gosh we go see them every year!! It is amazing how they just sit in the trees, then hunt for fish! They are beautiful!

f5moab,
Looks like you've been around. Capitol Reef is definitely on our list as we've never camped there, just day tripped in. We will be in your neck of the woods hopefully later this year. We'll try and get in touch to see some of those "special places" I'm sure you know about. Also, a local guy Royce Bair is doing a "Nightscape" workshop in Jackson Hole this July. Very cool stuff if you're interested. I haven't firmed up plans yet but I'd really like to go.
So what do you do when the sky is "severe clear"? Shoot flowers

Spent many days in Capital Reef and camped many nights in Cathedral Valley, under the stars and even in one really nasty thunderstorm. The valley is great place to set up camp (just make sure you are in BLM lands). Great place is by Carl's Reservoir...

I believe that is a photo of the Moon Pyramid off Caineville Wash Road. Have you done the entire loop from Caineville Wash to Hartnet trail and back down to 24? If not, it is fantastic.

For those wanting to visit this park and this area; I highly suggest traveling these two trails if you have a vehicle that will make it.

On the Hartnet trail, after crossing the Fremont River, you get to run in the Bentonite Hills...

Further up, to the south desert overlook looks what I would imagine Mars looks like:

Then further up the trail you have the Cathedral Valley overlook; great for a sunset shot

But this trip will be in the lower part of the park. Setting up camp at Cedar Mesa, off the Notum Bullfrog road and doing some off-roading in the H3. A lot of trails there I have not seen; yet.

As for clear skies, well in Southern Utah during the summer, a clear sky is all you have to work with.

And yes, I know some great areas to take photos that are off the beaten trail. Some require a serious 4x4 to get to, some just a 2-wheel with some decent ground clearance. From great areas above Labyrinth Canyon looking down onto the Green River, to going down a decent trail (narrow swithback) to the Green river.

For more serious places...Top of the World, Dome Plateau, and some of the backroads in Arches are great too.

f5moab,
Some really nice captures here. The image from the valley overlook is amazing. I bet that just glows at sunset. I was not able to do the loop due to the time constraints involved with our day trip handicap. That's all changed now, at least that's the plan. We drive an F150 4x4 with a short box so we can get around pretty good but nothing you'd want to take over on "Metal Masher". Will contact you for sure when we plan the next outing to the Moab area. Love the Arches!

True, no metal masher, steelbender, moab rim trails, but with that 4x4 the area opens up to many possibilities. Send me a PM when you decide to come on down.

I've heard it said there's never a bad view in Utah. Never been. Thanks for sharing.
