poor fuel milage while towing my new Crusader
Traded down from a Keystone Alpine to a 295rst CRUSADER. Was getting 9-11 MPG pulling the Alpine (12,400 dry weight-39ft).Bought the Crusader(8,777 lbs dry weight 32ft) for better fuel millage but am only getting between 8-9 on same roads.How can I get worst millage with smaller & less weight about 3500lbs less,anyone got a answer or simmiar problem out there.what are you guys getting pulling your rigs?

Is the Crusader taller in the front than the Alpine? Wind resistance plays a bigger part in milage than does weight.

Like Joe said- miles per gallon is directly related to wind resistance.
Weight is way 2nd.
Consider a spoiler- this one folds flat when not towing and it doesn't
require drilling your truck! If I had a 5er I'd definitely want one!
My trailer sits too far back for a spoiler to be much help

X2 - and speed increases resistance.
Also wind. I averaged 9 mpg on I-95 with a head wind. Same road a week later, it was a tail wind and I got 11 mpg.
We were ahead of schedule on that trip and couldn't occupy our site early, so we slowed down to time our arrival. The difference between my mileage at 55 mph and 63 mph (according to my on-board computer) was an astonishing 2 mpg. Just 8 mph slower resulted in a 22% fuel saving!

Also, drag goes up with the square of the wind velocity. Double your speed and your drag goes up by a factor of four! Triple your speed, it goes up by 9. So your drag at 60 mph is 9 times the drag at 20 mph and 4 times the drag at 30 mph.

Good question, I would like to see some good hard data.
One rig with and without under a lot of conditions and actual milage/miles.

If I may ... a chuckle ..... with no rv attached I get 20-22 mpg, when I plug in the 7 wire connector, it re-programs the ECU on the engine to 9-10 ..... just sayin!

Aerodynamics, once you overcome the weight resistance the rest is just aerodynamics and thats why trailers like airstream that are heavier can show huge differences in fuel consumption over the boxes we choose, its a wonder that the EPA or whatever it's called in the US has not looked at all trailers to lower there wind resistance and general airflow.

From everything I've read and from one of my friends experiences the only thing a spoiler does is help keep the bugs off the front of the trailer. The drag created at the rear of the trailer kills the mileage more than the design of the front.

Are you hot rodding it around a little more because it is lighter? Maybe pulling the hill a little faster and not realizing it. Kinda like when you first chip your truck and you can't keep your foot out of if for the first month and your MPG's suffer.

Also I might add that the camper I bought has 15" wheels. Thae Apline had 16" wheels wonder if that has a lot to do the MPG.The tire on the tow truck go 650 revolutions while the smaller tires on the camper go 750.Truck has 17" wheels.

Smaller tire 16" to 15".
The 15's do they carry less PSI?
Softer wider tire = more resistance = lower mileage, but not much.

Yes 15" carry 65lbs & are D rated...16" carry 80lbs, & are E rated.

I have not seen any on a trailer but I passed a MH Tuesday morning that had them from top of the side wall to the bottom.
One day some one will come out with a RV version of the "trailertail" I see on big rigs.

I don't know the answer to this I got a bigger trailer and my mileage went up to 10 from 9. Expected it to go down, wondering if there was brake drag on old trailer or some other drag causing it to be about the same as one 2000 lbs heavier and 6 ft longer.
