I like my John Deer deisel tractor and my old 1 ton diesel truck. For some reason the manuf. took the clacking noise out of the newer diesel truck engines, WHY??? Guess someone complained they didn't like the noise of the diesel engine so they punish us all. They even took the whistle out of the turbo!!! WHY???? I put a Rifraff turbo wheel in mine to make the whistle louder to make others mad. LOL Let her roar!!!
When the fed. EPA made the low sulfur requirement is when it went up, because of emissions. When they made that change they suggested that you change your rubber seals on the injectors or add an additive or they would dry up and crack. I never did anything to my engine on my sale boat and nothing happened at all. Off road diesel is not low sulfur. Just a rip off to the public. I would tell you what the head man at Chevron told me when I lived in California by there biggest refinery. But I learned that answer might be political .So I can't tell you per forum rules..

Technically, off-road diesel is low sulfur (500 PPM) and on road is ultra low sulfur (15 PPM.) I don't believe they refine any high sulfur anymore. And supposedly in 2016, even off road and heating oil will have to be ultra low. So there's that, I guess. I would love to hear what the Chevron guy told you...
