RC flight, anyone?

Hi folks,

Thought I'd share my other hobby... radio controlled flight. I like gas-powered fixed-wing airplanes, mostly in the 20-50cc range.

Any other RC pilots on here?

Thanks!

Beautiful boats! Do you bring them camping? On rare occasions I'll bring a plane if I can wangle some guest flying at a nearby field.

It sure is a great hobby!

Love the SBach 342! Mine was 29%, powered by a DA 50 - it flew like it was on rails! I don't have the time to devote to aerobatics now, so I sold it a couple of years ago.

That's a DA 120 in yours, I presume?

Tande... sounds familiar. If you frequent the RC flight forums you might know me as grosbeak.

Arrow

Our RV park has a dirt runway they let us maintain out back. We only fly park sized electric planes but have a lot of fun doing it.
I'm just getting into the hobby now...
The plane eating tree at the western end of the runway has been removed..
We're out in the desert so a lot of wide open sky to play in..

Probably to late this year for anyone but here is a event in our state that has become very popular, plus Lums Pond State park right next door has all full hook up sites.

I dont' have any gas stuff anymore. Although I have some 1.50 to .40 size models lying on the shelf, when I'm out boondock camping, I have two small 1/2 a nitro models I take with me. They are pretty durable and easy to pack with me. I don't do electric and never will. I will eventually get a drone to record video of our camping area but it'll be a gasser or nitro too!

I'll try to bring a smaller electric boat with me fishing, but we travel to races as well, this year we're going to the Supernats in Vegas. A few of us are making the trek from Alberta. It's a week of racing in October so the MH will be stuffed with boats and gear. Should be a blast.

For sure!

The bigger boats... are they glow or gas?

The big scales we race are glow, .67 ci, 11cc with tuned pipes. We mix our own fuel with 50% -60% nitro to make up for the altitude here. But I also have a 10s electric version of the Smokin Joes boat that is a rocket . There will be a ton of gas boats in Vegas but it hasn't really caught on up here. You can buy a RTR gas boat but the glow powered you have to start bare fg hull or wood build.
This is an 7.5 cc semi-scale boat I just finished but its pretty much the same layout.

I was seriously into R/C helos a few years ago, but pretty much given up for lack of time and sold all my stuff. I have one little micro coax left, and I just use it to pester the cats.

Tim

P.S. I got a friend in NY that flies these indoor acrobatics competition. This isn't him, but he sent me this video to show what guys are doing with R/C planes now. Jaw-droppingly impressive.

I was at a boy scout jamboree our troop was hosting there. I remember hearing this weird noise so we hiked out and found some old guys flying rc jets! As in little tiny jet engines in 4ft plane. It was the nearest thing ever and boy were they FAST!

Heli's.

Gas and electric.

Pretty much out of it now though.

I've got an old thunger tiger raptor 30 and an EFlite coaxial still hanging around but the TTiger hasn't had nitro in it for at least 4-5 years now (it's still FM! LOL!) and the Eflite has been needing new batteries for about a year now.

The TT actually had the pitch horn broken when we last moved (Shotty packers) and I just haven't felt motivation to get it fixed. It's a nice unit (CF blades, Al swashplate, Dir gyro, etc) but it would need new batteries, swap to digital control, etc. Just not interested in it enough to spend the cash or time.

Most of my flight time is now logged on Real Flite G4 these days. Sim/graphics is good enough, controls are real, nothing breaks when I crash, weather doesn't matter, new planes/airports/fields are a download away and set up and tear down consists of USB controller to the laptop and HDMI to the flat-screen.

Can fly it in the living room or the camper anytime I want.

Oddly enough, I bought G4 to get my flight skills up/ keep them sharp before crashing the real thing, but now the Sim is the preference over the real thing.
