Satellite photos updated

I just zoomed in on my house using Google Maps (maps.google.com) and there's my camper sitting on its pad next to the driveway. It looks nice from space. I don't know how often they update the satellite photos but this one can't be more than a year old.

I live in Nebraska and the photo of our house is from Aug of 2011. I'm looking at putting up a shed on our acreage and with this new photo I can try different sized sheds and locations to see what will work the best.

Love Google

I just was looking at my place yesterday. The photo of mine is much clearer than the last one and it's from at least mid summer this year. My garden is
evident and the corn is pretty tall. Must have been taken around July I guess. I suppose there's a date on them somewhere??

Google maps is fascinating !!

As a word of caution, if you post to this thread (with or without a photo), don't give out your address. If posting a overhead photo of your camper in the driveway, be sure to mark out any local references....street name, business name, local park, etc. This is an open forum, and anybody in the world has access. A couple of clicks of their mouse, and your physical location could be compromised.

Bill, I have a copy right mark from 2012 on my map, but that is not the photo date. I am showing an empty lot nearby that has had a house on it for at least the last 2 years.

well shucks - must be a different set-up for different locations - here's a pic of our local town that has the imagery date lower left :

Bill, I will mess with my settings. I don't even see a Lat/Long on mine. I like your view better.

Funny, but the overhead on mine shows my pop up parked in the driveway, but going to the street view shows my Winnebago.

of course the pics were taken at different times from different vehicles - not long ago some Frenchman was gonna sue Google because the street view vehicle caught him takin' a whiz alongside the road.....Bill

Another thing to be aware of with these Google maps. The different zoom levels can sometime show pictures from different times. So one view may have a picture from yesterday, but zoom out once and it changes to 3 years ago. And obviously Street View is completely different. But it's fun stuff for sure. The map that shows my sister-in-law and her dog is from 2007. I hope they don't update that one soon...it's fun to see that!

Mine view goes all the way back to 1993, before my house was even built, but the photos are really crappy from that time.

The guys on Duck Dynasty threw a bunch of decoys up on their roof and noted the date to see how often Google updates the satellite images... not a bad idea.

I've looked all over the new photos of my place. Unlike Whisky, my photos
do not show any date nor any lat or long.

FYI, using google maps you can find the lat and long of a location.
If you zoom in and center on the place in question you can click the little
chain icon to get a "link". If you take a good look at the link you will
find the lat and long buried in there among all the other numbers.
I've found this useful once or twice when I wanted the info for a GPS setting.

Also (slightly off topic I guess) you may have discovered that if you are
using google map to route a trip and save the trip when you re-open
the saved map you have lost some of the detail including the turn by
turn directions

I found some conversation online about this quirk and discovered that
rather than saving your map route to google "my maps" if you click
the chain icon and then copy and paste the "link" say in
notepad or word or an email to yourself- if you then use the "link" to
open google maps you will find all your turn by turn directions just as
they were when you created the route. This allows me to come back to
the turn by turn directions as many times as I want. This is especially
helpful if I'm planning a long trip with many stops over several days
or weeks.

My wife actually prefers detailed turn by turn google map routes over
AAA trip tics and we have used them for long trips with good results.
YMMV

.
for those who don't have the "imagery date", Lat/Long, etc info on their photos, try this :

open a view in Google Earth (your residence, for instance) then go to the top "bar", the one that has FILE - EDIT - VIEW - TOOLS, etc and click on VIEW

that'll create a drop-down menu

make sure the STATUS BAR is checked

that'll put the info along the bottom of the view.....Bill

Hey William-- I have been a google maps user for years and feel pretty
confident in my ability to use it.

I have to admit I am totally clueless with google earth.
What is it?
Do I need to download and install some sort of program to use it?
Are you willing to tutor me and others who have no clue

Maybe we should start a new thread titled "google earth for dummies"!!
Really- I don't want to hijack this thread too badly.....

Bill, I hate to be so uninformed on this, but I just don't see a top bar with those options on my screen. I have tried it in both Chrome and IE 8. Could you post a "snippet" of the bar you are seeing ??

I did get a Lat/Long reading by enabling that option and then hitting "shift" where the cursor was.

The photo of my house in Google Earth isn't the same as the one I get with Google Maps. It's the previous one, with a car in the drive but no camper. Zooming in doesn't change that. No surprise I guess, as they're separate apps and now we know they're not both updated on the same schedule.
