You don't. Even having a survivor changes you (ependydad = ependymoma + dad = her tumor type). I have friends who have lost kids and the pain is unlike anything I can comprehend.
It's also what makes gestures like what Bob's grand daughter did so amazing. It's heartwarming to hear of people (and especially kids) who care for "our family". I'm getting all ferklempt. Really awesome, Bob!
