Sorry to add another dimension to this issue. A fellow military person from Massachusetts in the 1960's era, referred to "pop" or "soda" as "tonic." He regretted the use of "tonic" for a long time thereafter. Poor guy was ridiculed for several months, all in fun.

Wow! There are so many more variations than I thought. I love how the Southerners say Coke for any kind of pop/soda. That's cute!

Michiganders love that Faygo Pop! We still catch ourselves saying "thats a case of Faygo" when a ball looks like a homerun in a Tigers game.

As an army brat who grew up in a bunch of different areas of the country, I say soda but most of the time simply refer to it as coke, sprite or root beer. I don't care which brand, I will call Pepsi coke and 7up or Sierra mist sprite. same thing with A &w or dr pepper, to me those are all root beer (and yucky at that).

Wow, I think that was from the early 70's qnd I remember that. I also remember the Towne Club Soda as there was a stoer less that a mile from our house. The fruit punch mixed with 7up was the greatest.

In our house, we have a mix, it's "pop" if it comes from a can/bottle and it's soda if it comes from the soda fountain, although all I stock in it is Coke, Sprite, and diet Mt Dew. The sandwich is a "sub". It's ginger ale, but I only drink Vernors! Now for the big question. Is it a "couch", "sofa", or "Davenport"? (you could be showing your age here).

Oh man, you were doing okay until you referred to Dr. Pepper as a root beer! That is sacriligious! Everyone needs a little pick me up at 10, 2, and 4! But not with a root beer. Yuck!

A4: I'll have a 7 UP

Note A3...if you answer "Coke" to "what kind", that means you want an actual Coca Cola.
As a kid growing up, whenever we went to a restaurant or on a family trip, my Dad would ask what kind of Coke do you want? The discription above is spot on as it went down in my house. It was your responsibility to identify the flavor. If you said "coke", you got a Coke. If you said "orange" you got whatever orange flavored carbonated beverage he either ordered or grabbed out of the "ice box". I still say icebox. Dad is from Alabama and I grew up in SC.
