Spam calls question.
We have been receiving a few spam calls lately.
My question is: Most of them don't answer or start their pitch when I say Hello. If they are trying to sell something why don't they start when I answer?
I know some of you are going to say don't answer the call, but I am not ever going to fall for these things.

When you get a hangup call their robots are testing the number. The computer listens to see if a real person answers. If you do they now know that it's a good number and they gather information about your voice and can fairly certainly tell your age and sex.
The auto dialers also dial an enormous amount of numbers and once you answer it assigns the call to an agent. If there are no agents available immediately and your number isn't known to be a productive number you get dropped and added to the short call back list.
The best thing to do when answering unknown calls is to not say a word until they initiate. Then you can decide if you want to hang up.

Robo calls. When the phone system detects the phone has been picked up by a live person. It transfers the call to a telemarketer. That's why there is that delay.

Not registered on the do not call list. I was getting a lot of those calls before I registered and they were eating minutes on my cell now I get no calls from any telemarketer. Back when we had a regular telephone I used to set the phone down while they did their thing then come back in 5 min and ask them to repeat it, walk away again then come back in 5 min and tell them I still didn't understand. By this time they give up and put you on their do bot call list.

Most of the people who do legitimate business with me call me on my cell phone. If or when they do call my house phone, they say Hello right after I answer. When the spammers call with that computer generated call, I give them two chances to say hello. It goes like this; ring ring; I say hello, one second hello one second then hang up. I do not usually get a repeat computer call. If someone I know gets hung up on, they will call back; if it is important.

That's a good one.
Now, though you should add yourself to the do not call registry, they still have ways around it. All it takes is registering for that one giveaway, warrantee, or rebate. Once they have your number, they can be an affiliate to them and start the calls all over again. I also use Blacklist on my Android phone. (Their are others like it.)

Thanks Bama -that explains it all. The reason I answer these calls is because I sort of enjoy listening to these idiots, but I will follow your advice about not saying anything until they do.
Thanks again to you and the others who answered my question.

Spam or scam callers are using outside the US computers and could care less about the Fed " Do Not Call List" Go to NOMOROBO.com and check to see if your phone carrier is supported. If it is sign up. It is a free legit service that simultaneous dials their 800# when your phone rings. Their computer looks to see if the number is on their blacklist and hangs up. You get one ring and done. It saves me 4-5 calls a day.

Guess the asking them when their dinner time is so I can call them back then has pissed them off enough I haven't been called since re registering last winter when all the cell phones became free game.
Another favorite is telling them I will buy anything they have to sell if they buy one thing from me at my price. When they ask what and how much the price tag usually gets a no. Then I tell them guess you lost a sale have a nice day.

If I know its a spam call; with Verizon and my Galaxy S5, you can block that number by pressing and holding the number. then in the upper right (...)add it to your auto reject list.
Your phone could be similar( auto reject )
Easy and it works

Great info. Unfortunately my carrier (AT&T) doesn't subscribe to it presently.
I'll call them and request they do subscribe.

You're not talking about the hoax that has been going around for 10+ years about all the cell phone numbers being released to telemarketers are you?

I'm retired! I get bored some days! Keep on calling, I love it!!
One day I got a call about my nearly new computer being infected and I needed him to fix it. I knew it was a scam but that didn't stop me. He said they were going to shut down my Microsoft account if I didn't comply. After a few choice words I said " DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!!!!' and hung up. Guess what? He called back and ask why I hung up. I then started to into him that went on for a few minutes until HE hung up!! Ha Ha! Microsoft still works and the calls stopped.

If nobody's around, I have the habit of sounding like one of those 1-900 lines..... They don't call back.

Best thing to do is pass the call to your two year old if you have one.

Another thing SmartPhone users can do is creat your own blacklist. on a Iphone (I am sure Android can as well) tap th "i" net to the number, scroll down to the bottem and tap "Block this caller" POOF no more worries from this number!

Next time they call from "Microsoft" ask how they got your number since you are running a Mac. You will get a click ( hang up ) !!!
