A long hook won't work? The big box stores (HD or Lo..) have electricians fishing rods. They're made from fiberglass and can be threaded together to make a rod 10' long. They come with a hook, but it wouldn't take much to add a magnet. See attached pix of my set.

That would have worked.

I under estimated the effort that it would take to lift the storm grate. I also was incredibly wrong in thinking that it was hinged on one side. I've now dropped the cover down into the hole (and it's way heavier than I'm prepared to give to lift it back out, if I even could). I got my keys, but I had to call the PoPo and they're sending utilities folks out to recover it.

I'm starting to wonder if the utilities people will be out today.

One set of keys? Is that a cost cutting measure on Ram's behalf? Thinking a second set is in order soon!

No, I have 2 (maybe 3) sets. It was one of my sets of keys. And fortunately this all happened outside of my house!

All is right with the world. They sent out 3 trucks and 6 guys to retrieve and reseat the grate.

They used a winch to pick it up out of the hole but still tried setting it back into place by hand. I almost had a moment of redemption when I thought it was going to fall back in. They then used the winch to lower it into place.

Oh, and I did walk out just in time to see one of the guys ask the other, "How in the he-double-hockey-sticks did they do this?" I fessed up about the keys, dropping it, and imagining it was hinged. Friendly group agreed when I called myself a dumbass.
