My sisters car was stolen from my driveway last month by four young thugs (2 guys, 2 girls). Went on a joy ride, stole some small articles and wrecked the car. They've be apprehended, detained and now awaiting a hearing to face over a 100 charges. The frustrating thing about all this is that I heard the commotion outside my door and just thought it was my neighbours.

That's your car..I don't now if everyone's familiar with the "digital "life" package that you can get where you can "monitor" and unlock your home from your smart phone...don't sign up for this unless you have a great network that is secure as possible, and even then your at the mercy of your cell phones ability to encrypt the traffic coming from your device. I have read about hackers being able to login into these systems and once the system is compromised they have everything they need to watch when you leave your home and have the ability to turn off the alarm and unlock the door....

now that's is scarey

If you have (ANY) paperwork in your car to ID your Home location or GPS with Home /Recall and a Door remote, hope your vehicle is Not stolen! They will drive your car to your house and pull right in the garage! Youroo!!

Thanks for the article Herk!!

Sad fact is this is the new tomorrow. Now buying cheap is buying software that is untested or bug ridden and easily hacked.

Since the smartphone this has been a problem as people/companies rush to get stuff to the market.

It is time to get up to snuff with network/packet sniffers and learn how to use them and monitor your own stuff!

Kind of wonder, if the police observed this happening, how is it that they didn't arrest the perps, confiscate the device and have it analyzed?

Because there are no laws for unlocking someones car. Only for damaging it or entering it physically. The laws need to change to keep up with technology. It is kind a like catching someone with a pry bar and black gloves. If you cant prove they committed a crime with them nothing you can do.

Put your garage door opener receptacle circuit on a switch inside the garage, turn it off when you leave!

It depends, good for extended periods of time away from home, or nightly if you are concerned about the door opening during the night, just switch back on in morning! We don't switch off to go shopping because you do want it to open when you get back home. As they say, each to his own!

I sent my engineer geek son the link that Lou posted and here's his reply--

"Yep, any computer can be hacked. I used to do it all the time at best buy. Someone would forget to give us their password when they brought their computer in for service and it was just easier for me to hack it than call and ask for the password.
The thieves just need a way in. Now that all the new cars come with wireless systems, they've got their door. And the technology ignorant government makes it law that EVERY car have these systems. They force things such as tire pressure monitoring on every new car built since 2007, and voila. That's a wireless system that can be used to gain access to every other electric system in the car. You could even hack a car on the highway and crank on the e-brake now that a lot of them are electronic. That gives you a warm feeling huh. Problem is, by the time the authorities catch on, their will already be millions of cars on the road with easily hackable systems.
It's funny that a simple manual key lock is your best defense."
