Truck Brand Names

Having trucks in the family since '75, I'm kind of old school when it comes to pickups. Pickups didn't have a model name, just a designation. If I'm asked what I'm driving, it's a full size GMC or Chev, not a Silverado or Sierra (Which used to be the trim levels).

Ford has broken down their truck line into 2 segments, F150 & the rest (F250 & up) are Super Dutys.

A while back, some pencil pusher @ GM sent out a memo saying that the use of Chev or Chevy to refer to Chevrolet was to stop. Well w/ the negative reaction, the memo was rescinded.

In '09 Chrysler, "spun off" the truck portion of Dodge to the "Ram" brand. I'll pose this question to the Dodge owners out there, "Do you refer to your truck as a Dodge or a RAM

I call mine the Big Red Lemon most of the time and as for the rest, it's a Dodge Ram nothing more or less.

It always amazes me how far removed from the consumer and product that a marketer can be. How preposterous to say Chevy is not to be used. This is what happens when a car marketer is not a car guy. A REAL car guy would know better.

P.S. I think Dodge is better than Ram and another case where some marketing foofoo has made a booboo.

X2

One exec GM brought on board back in the 80s was from Proctor & Gamble. He might've known the toothpaste market, but I think selling cars & trucks is a bit different.

If I had the chance I would've liked to have asked the Vehicle Line Executive for full size trucks, what their history was pertaining to trucks was. Some of the decisions you saw, you wondered if the person had ever used a truck in the past. When we 1st saw the last version of Sierras that our plant built, 1 chap from head office said that the low spot in the centre of the hood was for a hood scoop (I guess like some of the Toy' trucks have had). I just shook my head.

Didn't Dodge rework the hood of their pickups in the 80s to get rid of the 2 rain catcher depressions?

Well, not to hijack the thread, I'm driving brand "N" these days.

That said--I work for a company that is all about the brand identity of our product lines. I get it to a point--you want to build product recognition and brand loyalty.

For some of the long-standing companies, I'll opine that the public uses whatever is most familiar to them in their formative years.

When I bought my Dodge in late 2009 the dealer told me they were spinning off the truck division and calling it Ram so that if they had to it would make it easier to find a buyer for without the rest of the Dodge baggage since at that time the only thing selling were Dodge trucks.Still I think they should change it back to Dodge.

I hope you didn't fall for that load of bs!
My new Dodge truck is a Dodge. Only when looking for parts do I refer to it as a Ram 1500.
