X2...I told my parents a very long time ago, spend smartly and as much as you can...just leave me instructions how you want any remaining money to be spent (charity, missions, etc...) when y'all go as I don't need/expect it for myself

Career firefighter since '89. 3 years Engine work,7 years Rescue Squad and the rest a Ladder guy. Yes, things are starting to hurt for no reason except getting older. I just hope my pension is there when I retire. The wife is disabled with back issues. Just glad to be working and able.

DW and I are both active duty Army. She's going to retire at 20 and I plan on staying to 30 or until they point to the door and start playing really loud music... Still a long way to go but so far loving every minute of it. She plans on teaching after the big green machine and I plan on doing something that involves not being in charge of anyone, especially 20 year olds, ha ha!

Offshore. Stupid money and 6 months off a year. All I did was take a break from college to make money, and that was 18 years ago. Some people may say I'm not home much, but do the math, I have more time with my wife kids than the average 9 to 5 job would allow. Not many jobs work a 21 day on, 21 day off rotation, thus giving you a 6 month vacation.
This job allows us to practically live like we're retired. No debt, full timing, homeschooling kids, live where we want, and we're only in our upper 30's. Can't beat it. Of course, none of this came over night. We did work VERY hard to get where we're at now.

Seems to be a lot of us from the oil patch on here tonight. I just retired at the end of last year. For the last seven years I was a 28-28 rotator in West Africa. It was like being retired every other month. It was great practice for the real thing.

Two of my sons are in the same field BigJohnD, but in gas, not oil. Yep, stupid money.
Remember that gas well that blew out a couple months ago in the gulf? Yep, my youngest manchild was on it.
They kept it contained, no fire, and as an electrician he was no where near the deck when it blew. It was back under control in less than 24 hours.
Oddly enough, while cell phones won't work (no signal) out there, texting does. I was dying about twice a second until that text came through!
Both of them are electricians actually. With ex h and I owning an a/c dealership, they learned "hands on" every summer from the time they were old enough to safely shadow their dad, and most of our business was commercial.

Now that's eerie. My son's wife is an RN also.

Gotta love iMessage / texting through wifi. It's how I talk to my wife and kids every night if not on the phone. Offshore has come a LONG way. Glad your son, and crew was ok. My wife is an RN as well, and so our a lot of my coworkers wifes. What's up with that?
