Why Are You Up at 3 am?

Not sure how many people pay any mind to what time threads are posted or who is online, but, I'm one of those people. If you look at some of my threads or posts, you'll see some crazy hours of the night or morning. Well, I have an explanation for this. I work 21 days on, 21 days off in the gulf of mexico on a drilling rig. My first 2 weeks, I work from noon until midnight every day. My 3rd week, I work midnight until noon. Since I work in the control room, the desk top computer is on 24/7, and of course FRF is running in the background, and I check it every now and then when things are slow.

So, when I notice your green light showing that YOUR online at 3 am, what are you doing? Just curious how many are just up late, can't sleep, midnight snack, working etc etc.

I just don't sleep through the night much anymore. I wake up frequently around 3am. Can't get back to sleep, so I get up and putter around on the internet for an hour and go back to bed.

Bad thing is, I go to bed around 11:30, and have to be up at 6:00. :-P

Ahh. Didn't know that about the times. Well, midnight to noon central time for me I suppose. When I'm home, usually no later than midnight.

Red Wolf, sounds like my home schedule, timewise anyway. Kids in bed by 8, actually asleep by maybe 10, me and wife quality time till close to midnight, and me, I'm up at the crack of dawn by choice.

Two of my sons are rig workers...electricians...one on shore, one off shore...gas rigs, not oil. Third son is also an electrician...currently designing/installing solar systems for government installations.

Remember the rig that blew out of control in the gulf 3 or 4 months ago? My youngest man child was/is on that rig! I died a thousand times until I got a text from him. (odd thing...even though there's no phone signal for him out there, he can send and receive texts).

"Mom, I'm an electrician....so I'm no where near the drilling deck...I'm fine....no fire...all systems working as designed, soon to be under control." I could hear the eyeroll tone in his voice through the texted words. /grin

I used to be quite the night owl....the older I get the more I become an early bird...I wake up at 4:02 (yes, exactly 4:02) every morning now, no matter how determined I am to sleep late. grrrrr I can remember in my 20's being able to sleep past NOON on weekends. Now I'd feel like I'd wasted 1/4 of my weekend if I did that.

At 3AM I am getting ready for work, it is a rare day when I sleep in past 4AM even on my days off.

Plus I do not log out most of the time, if I am chances are good I was logged out by the site for several possible reasons.

I have to get up and take some meds, so I will check the forum, sometimes I will go back to sleep but I'm usually up about an hour or I'll try to get back to sleep again. Sometimes I can sometimes I can't. Talked to the Dr. about my sleep habits and she said if you are getting 6 hrs. in 24 hours don't worry about it. But I do like my naps. I also do not sign out I keep forgetting my password. Right now to the right of this screen it says the most users ever online was 3472, on 03/05/2014 at 03:14 AM on top it says 543 members on line and 969 guests. Now I find that hard to believe. I find it hard to reset my internal time clock. Tried it a couple of times. Also I have learned that the threads might be 3 mos. old, never use to check the dates. It would be nice IMO that the OP lets everyone know what the out come was. Then you would know what they found and how it was repaired. A lot of the problems are recurring and you would be able to see what the fix was. But my sweet wife say's I'm just a forum junkie. The problem is that she is right.

My work schedule is 4am to 4pm. I'm up at 130am and reading the forum. On vacation this week (today is last day), so I'll be up early again. Even on days off I'm usually up around 3am.

Love the responses. Some up for work, some just up by choice, some up for other reasons. Interesting info if nothing else. My wife and kids are the type that will sleep late if they can. Me, when I'm home, I don't like to miss one ounce of daylight. I cherish every minute that I'm home. At home, very early morning is coffee, forum and watch sun come up. I can do that, wash vehicle or camper, go fish and do other things, and still be back in the camper before everybody else is ready for breakfast. That's my personal quiet time of the day.

Some work offshore for the money, and no doubt it's good. I'd say 99% of the reason I still do it after over 18 years, is the 6 months of vacation a year. LOTS of quality time with my homeschooled kids. We live like retired folks half the year.

So, right now it's just after midnight, I just came on shift, and here I am posting again.

It's 9:40 pm here in AK right now... After midnight or 1 am for many fellow forum members.

Still plenty of daylight left... Sun will be setting... sometime later this summer.

I'm naturally a night owl. I worked 12 hrs night shifts for almost 10 yrs and then I did rotating day and night 12 hrs shifts for almost 2 yrs. Even though I switched to all 8 hrs Dayshifts in 2010, my body still wants to be up at night.

I fall asleep on the couch a lot so when I finally do go to bed I have a heck of a time getting to sleep so I'll get on my iPad and surf. If I don't sleep on the couch and hit the hay around midnight then I'll sleep right through. Tonight was a fall asleep on the couch night!!

I was looking at the times again, and when I post, that's what time it is here. I think there is a setting on the UCP to adjust what time zone you're in. Like your post Brian, just showed up 05:40, even though you posted it at 06:40.
