Why NOT to tow with a Toyota...

He had already unhooked the trailer while waiting for the tow truck. Driver said the ball joint let go. Two more miles and he would have been up to highway speed.

That could happen to any vehicle with ball joints which now a days is practically all. Especially independent front suspension vehicles. (Yeah that means you GM guys)

Same thing happened to me in my 2000 Dakota. Left hand turn then "THUNK". Turns out there was a recall on it concerning the upper ball joints. All I had to pay for was replacing my lower ball joints (since they were doing the upper ones) and 4-wheel alignment (recall only paid for a partial alignment).

I don't think you can label a car company a poor choice in regards to reliability and safety over a single example of a mechanical failure. On the other hand, if I owned a vehicle that had 19 recalls, I would definitely be concerned. Larry G.

I beg to differ. My Toyota is solid as it is dependable. Preventative maintenance is key to making sure the unthinkable does not happen. That being said, not all preventative maintenance can prevent mechanical failures. Any vehicle can be subject to failures.

Oh please

Give me a break. You have no idea how many miles are on the Taco and/or what sort of maintenance has been done (or not) in those miles. Any impact damage from curbs to front suspension?

My 1992 4Runner (airport car) has 270,000 miles on it and and still going strong.

2000 Sienna - sold at 160,000 miles with only minor issues.

My 2011 Tundra - 60,000 miles - routine maintenance only.

My son's 2012 Tacoma with 70,000 miles - no issues.

This whole GM/Ford/RAM vs Toyota thing is ridiculous. I won't buy from the Big Three, but certainly won't fault you if you do.

Yea, this pit stop was considerably longer than 12 seconds, he was making up for all those under 12 in years past!

My Toyota Tacoma has over 230,000 miles on it. Still runs and drives great.

I put a new ball joint in a ford Mustang once and two weeks later I hit a very large pot hole that caused the new ball joint to fail. It can happen to any make or model.

Very true but we do not need to file class actions for our ball joints like you do for your engine.

It maters not which brand you drive now days when it comes to ball joints, most are no longer serviceable like in years past. My F350 only has a few grease points on the front end.

Your comment has NOTHING to do with IFS or ball joint failure but with 161,000mi+ on my 6.0 I have zero complaints and I own it, no payments.
Try sticking on topic.

With the sub-forum topic being "off topic", what exactly is the topic?

Too funny. Little do you guys know I own a Denali. I don't play the manufacturer game.
But like this topic showed in the first post, in my field I can detect weaknesses. And all IFS trucks with upper/lower control arms have it. Once that one lower balljoint lets go you have immobilized failure, whether it's Toyota, Nissan, or GM. Unlike a solid axle truck such as Ford Super duty & Dodge/Ram 2500+, where you'd have to have complete upper and lower ball joint failure which is unlikely.
