Picture Stabilizer bar project
Fabricated my own stabilizer bars.

Fabricated the bars in the garage during the cold days over the last few months. The last 2 weeks have been warm enough for me to install the bars. Not to wag my tail to hard, but boy do they look good and most important...the really seem to work well to reduce movement sitting here in the shed.

Tools:
Hack saw
110v wire feed welder (Harbor Freight - $99)
Small bench top drill press (Harbor Freight - $49)
Grinders, files, sandpaper

Components: (all materials from Lowes)
3' 1/2" & 3/4" weldable tubing (work ok front to rear without shortening, but may have to shorten for your side to side bars)
3/4" & 1" weldable square tubing for brackets (most labor intensive part
1/4"x3/8" - 3/4" & 1" Hillman sleeves
1/4" bolts, washers & nuts
5/16" bolt and nut for the "lock down" (weld nut to lower bar and weld a rod to top of bolt to make handle

Picture Step support
One of the rewards of never throwing anything away is that you can always find something to help you fabricate something. I found a bed frame support leg in my one of my boxes of metal stuff. It's a 1 1/4" tube with threaded caps pressed in each end. The threads take a 5/8" threaded rod. I picked up a standard hinge at Lowes, some spare 5/8" rod from my junk box, and made the foot from another piece of spare metal. I'll mount the hinge to the bottom of the first step. The hinge allows you to fold the leg down for support and up against the bottom of the step for storage. 1/18/14...fabricated and painted the support. Now all I have to do is mount and figure out how to secure the support for storage. "Watch this space."
