thank you for getting back, I am doing and engine change (350) as I have a rod knock, my truck is at 6500 lbs and trying to get a good feel of where to be, I at least want 1000 lbs lee way and so far have found a weight where I will feel comfortable.
I have the Rockwood 2502s with a 3900 dry weight rating. I pull this with a 2007 Explorer Sports Track 4.6 liter V8 with towing package. The truck is rated at 6880 lbs max towing plus 1200 lbs cargo (passengers, etc.).
I add about 500-600 lbs to the dry weight max and it pulls fine. I live in north Georgia and have some pretty steep hills it holds 55 mph at 3200 rpm on 7% up grades and gets 9.5 mpg in this terrain. I recently went to Florida averaged 13.4 mpg at 65 mph.
Biggest issue with these boxy trailers is head wind. The Rockwoods are 8 ft. wide and 8 ft. high so you have 64 sq ft of "sale area" in front and boy can strong gusts slow you down and burn up the gas.
Your vehicle should tow 3900 - 4500 with out a problem.
