12V clip-on fan

My wife came home with the 12V fan from Wally-World the other day. A great find at 12.98 but the only problem was it plugs into a "cigar" lighter.

Simple enough fix. Run to Radio Shack and buy a large mono plug, the same size that fits in the light fixture. (Our pop-up has three fixtures with the matching socket.) Clip the cigar lighter plug on the fan and install the mono plug. Positive (the wire with the white stripe) goes to the center pin.

Thanks for the typo-laugh Chevy. I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, but it makes for a great way to sign-off for the day.

Hey RV-Ninner--what the heck is a mono plug? I only know of one for audio use, not power...please explain or post picture??? Jan

I have 2 12v fans for dry camping, and I installed 2 cigar lighter sockets for them, which was very easy to do. 2 wires, ran from any light fixture, and they are done. Many uses for these- car cell phone chargers, for one example. Randy

Yep, the power jack on the light fixtures is a standard mono audio jack. With only 12 volts, it is a simple and inexpeive solution for providing power to other devices. Much better than a standard "Cigar" plug.

Click on the picture below to go to the Radio Shack link for the mono jack I used.

Radio Shack also sells a two-into-one AKA "Y" adapter for these mono plugs. (I couldn't find it on their site.) I bought one of those so I could plug in the fan and an extra light at the same time.

Randy,

Good idea to add a plug to charge cell phones and the like.

Since the above mentioned mono plugs come two to a pack, why not pick up one of these 12-foot extension cords and replace the "cigar" plug with the extra mono plug?

Typically I plug my phone into the "always" hot jack in my truck when it needs to be charged. When connected to ground power, I use the 110 V outlets in the camper.
