Domestic Frig Fan Mod / 2001 FR 1610

Hiya'll:

I wanted to share some pics and thoughts of my recent modifications to assist the cooling of my absorption refrigerator on the 2001 Forest River Rockwood 1610 PUP.

It wasn't a hard mod. It's a very common mod.

In the past my frig has taken about 24 hours on (AC) shore power to get cold before traveling. I've been using a battery operated fan on the inside of the frig to aid in the internal circulation. Overall the performance is only so-so.

On my To Do list for the trailer was the common external fan mod.

Several months ago I ran across a discarded older computer case with components still inside. I placed it into the garage and figured I'd get to the frig mod sometime.

What I did basically was fabricated a a piece of metal (salvaged from the old desktop computer case) into an exhaust deflector that I bolted onto the T-piece of the flue. This piece of metal is used to deflect and direct the hot/warm air away from the cool find. By placing my hand near the exhaust and fins both before and after I could tell a difference in the hot air that moved into the fins. It worked....

The next thing I did was wired a salvaged computer fan (from the same discarded computer case) into the main wires for the frig and placed a toggle switch inline. I mounted the fan by screwing it into the wood frame with a screw. The fan was powerful enough to effectively blow the hot air out of the exhaust port and pull cooler air from below. Great circulation!

I used to have to plug the trailer into (AC) shore power 24 hrs before starting down the road in order to chill the frig. It would be cold in about 24 hrs.... Immediately after I completed the work I plugged the trailer into (AC) power, turned on the fan, closed all the compartments and set the stopwatch.

The frig chilled in 5 hours!!!!! Mission accomplished.

It also needs mentioning that the day I finished the mod and tested the ambient So Cal weather temperature was 93*F and the trailer was in my driveway where there is no shade.

Hope this helps anyone in need.
